Trump's allies denounce the New York trial as a politically motivated farce

Allies of former President Donald Trump, including North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Florida Rep. Byron Donalds, Rep. Cory Mills and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, have voiced their disapproval of the ongoing trial against Trump in New York. They have criticized the trial as a politically motivated charade orchestrated by Democrats ahead of the 2024 election.

Ramaswamy, who was present in court in New York, described the trial as a depressing spectacle and criticized the prosecution's strategy as an attempt to bore jurors into submission. He also argued that the case against Trump, led by Alvin Bragg, is based on the premise that Trump should have used campaign funds for an allegedly personal payment, a move that would have strengthened the case against him.

Donalds, during a news conference outside the courthouse, criticized the presiding judge's failure to recuse himself despite his daughter's involvement in Democratic fund-raising activities connected to the trial. He described the situation as a travesty of justice and a misuse of the judicial system.

The lawsuit centers on payments made to former porn star Stormy Daniels to allegedly hush up her claims of an extramarital affair with Trump in 2006, a claim she has consistently denied. Prosecutors allege that the Trump Organization reimbursed Michael Cohen, Trump's former lawyer, for those payments and fraudulently recorded them as legal expenses. They are working to prove that Trump falsified records with the intent to commit or conceal a crime.

Trump has pleaded not guilty and maintains his innocence. The trial began with testimony from Cohen, who detailed his personal payment of $130,000 to Daniels in order to enforce a non-disclosure agreement. Cohen's testimony also included his secret recording of Trump in 2016 about another payment to former Playboy model Karen McDougal, who also claimed an affair with Trump.

As the trial continues, Trump allies are vowing to continue campaigning for the former president, arguing that Americans are currently struggling with spiraling inflation under the Biden administration.
