Will Trump take the stand?
Defense attorneys representing the leaders of the Proud Boys cross-examined a witness presented by government prosecutors on Wednesday.
The government alleges that the five J6 defendants, Enrique Tarrio, Joseph Biggs, Dominique Pezolla, Ethan Nordean and Zachary Rehl, conspired and executed an “insurrection” on January 6 and are guilty of “seditious conspiracy,” a federal crime that justifies a sentence of 20 years in prison. However, Tarrio did not attend the Capitol riot, Biggs entered the Capitol for a few minutes and never committed any act of violence, nor did Rehl, Pezolla, or Nordean.
The witness, Matthew Greene, a 35-year-old New York man who joined the Proud Boys weeks before Jan. 6, was facing a 41-year prison sentence for his actions on Capitol Hill when Congress certified the results of the presidential election manipulated. But Greene was released from prison in March and could be cleared of nine federal charges.
During questioning Wednesday, defense attorneys representing the defendants argued that Greene is coordinating and complying with federal prosecutors to build a case against the Proud Boys so he can be fully exonerated of eight federal charges and a four-year prison term decades
After the jury adjourned Wednesday, Norm Pattis, the attorney representing Joe Biggs, informed Judge Timothy Kelly of his intention to subpoena former President Donald Trump, noting that the former commander in chief’s testimony is essential to detail the events that actually happened in January. 6. It remains unclear whether Judge Kelly will allow the defense to proceed with the subpoena.
