More than 250 Hollywood actors and actresses have signed a letter demanding that social networks like Facebook censor objections to LGBTQIA+ and transgender issues.
The censorship campaign was organized by GLAAD (the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) and copied the following executives of the social media giant: Mark Zuckerberg, Meta Platforms, Inc.; Neal Mohan, YouTube/Alphabet Inc.; Shou Zi Chew, TikTok/ ByteDance Ltd.; and Linda Yaccarino and Elon Musk, Twitter, Inc./X Corp.
The letter, signed by entertainers including Chelsea Handler, Dakota Fanning, Demi Lovato, Debra Messing, Elliot Page, Patrick Stewart and Zooey Deschanel, follows in full below:
As prominent celebrities, influencers, and public figures with significant social media followings, we, the undersigned, call on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and Twitter to deliver on the promises you’ve made to transgender, nonbinary, nonconforming people to gender and all LGBTQ users in your terms of service. There has been a massive systemic failure to ban anti-LGBTQ hate, harassment and malicious misinformation on your platforms and it needs to be fixed.
Dangerous posts (both content and ads) created and distributed by anti-LGBTQ hate accounts with large followings targeting transgender, non-binary and gender non-conforming people are thriving on your platforms, directly resulting in harm scary things in real life, including bomb threats aimed at children. hospitals providing health care for trans youth and death threats directed at care providers. This fake, hate-driven content circulating widely on your platforms is even being cited by lawmakers pushing for discriminatory legislation against trans people. Gender misrepresentation and the naming of trans and non-binary people is a pervasive form of hate speech across all platforms, used to intimidate and harass prominent public figures while expressing hatred and contempt for trans and non-binary people in general.
This misinformation and hate, inadequately moderated on your platforms, plays a disproportionate role in the sharp increase in anti-transgender targeting and violence in the real world. As the Human Rights Campaign Foundation documented in 2022, this is particularly the case when it comes to online extremists who lead proactive coordinated campaigns of hate and lies about gender affirmation in youth health care trans. While all leading medical and psychological associations affirm the safety and need for gender-affirming health care for trans people, including young people, inflammatory misinformation falsely claiming that such health care is dangerous is allowed to spread. happen on your platforms because it generates clicks and profits. Trans youth and their families and care providers are at risk because of your neglect, causing many families to flee their homes.
Your policies and enforcement are inadequate in mitigating harmful and dangerous anti-LGBTQ content. You must take urgent steps to protect trans and LGBTQ users on your platforms (including protecting us from over-coercion and censorship).
We ask that you meet with community leaders and creators to learn about these real-world harms that result from anti-trans content on your platforms, and to create and share plans for how you will address:
Content that spreads malicious lies and misinformation about the medical care needed by transgender youth. As described above, this harmful content from hate-based accounts with large followings has caused extraordinary damage in the real world. Specific mitigations for such misinformation should be developed (eg, similar to election and COVID-19 mitigations and rules). Accounts and posts that perpetuate extremist anti-LGBTQ hate and misinformation, in violation of Platform Policies, and that target trans and LGBTQ people, including baseless and malicious misinformation about LGBTQ people that is threatening for children (eg the anti-LGBTQ “groomer” conspiracy theory). Such harmful and dangerous lies must be moderated and mitigated more effectively. Dehumanizing and hateful attacks on prominent transgender public figures and influencers. Online attacks against LGBTQ organizations and individuals are on the rise. A recent report by GLAAD, UltraViolet, Kairos and the Women’s March shows that 60% of LGBTQ people feel harmed not only by direct harassment and hate, but by witnessing harassment against other members of the LGBTQ community , such as celebrities and public figures. These videos remain live even though Media Matters, GLAAD and other organizations have reported these violations to YouTube.
We know that leading national organizations including GLAAD, HRC, Media Matters for America, PFLAG, The Trevor Project, ADL and others share research and guidance with your businesses and escalate infringing content. And yet your mitigations remain woefully inadequate. The very content you benefit from violates your own terms of service, which state that you don’t allow hate speech.
True allies do not benefit from anti-LGBTQ hate.
We speak with one voice to demand that your companies create and enforce stronger content and advertising policies to directly confront content that is causing harm online and offline to transgender, non-binary and gender non-conforming people .
