Former NFL employee accused of embezzling $22 million

Former Jacksonville Jaguars employee Amit Patel is facing charges for allegedly embezzling more than $22 million from the NFL team to fund his extravagant lifestyle, according to recent court filings. Patel reportedly used the stolen funds for online gambling, personal travel and lodging, sports tickets, a new Tesla car, a Nissan pickup, cryptocurrency investments and a property in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. He also purchased a Patek Philippe Nautilus watch, worth more than $95,000, using the proceeds of his fraudulent activities.

Patel is accused of wire fraud and illegal monetary transactions, siphoning millions through the team's virtual credit card (VCC) system over a four-year period. The Jaguars confirmed that they had employed Patel and were victims of his alleged crimes. In a statement, the team confirmed that Patel's employment was terminated in February 2023 and that they have fully cooperated with the FBI and the United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida during the investigation.

The team found that Patel, a former manager of financial planning and analysis, took advantage of his position of trust to carry out significant fraudulent financial activities for personal gain. They said he had no access to confidential football strategy or personal information. An independent review by experienced law and accounting firms concluded that no other employees of the team were involved in or aware of Patel's criminal activities.

According to court documents, Patel was the sole administrator of the Jaguars' VCC system, which works similar to a traditional credit card account but without a physical card. Between September 2019 and February 2023, Patel allegedly devised a complex scheme to funnel money undetected. He reportedly duplicated legitimate recurring VCC transactions, inflated the amounts of those transactions, entered completely fictitious transactions that appeared plausible, and moved legitimate VCC charges from the following months to the integration file month immediately due to the department of accounting

Patel has waived his right to an indictment, and the case will continue based on sworn information filed by federal prosecutors.
