Drollinger: God Sets a High Standard for What Comes Out of a Believer’s Mouth

Every day, we speak thousands of words without giving much thought to what we are saying. We use language to communicate with others and to express our thoughts and emotions. However, as believers, we should always remember that God sets a high standard for what comes out of our mouths.

One person who takes this standard seriously is Ralph Drollinger, the founder of Capitol Ministries. For more than 20 years, Drollinger has been leading Bible studies for lawmakers in the heart of political power – Washington, D.C. He has also expanded his ministry to include studies for believers in state capitals and foreign countries.

At the core of Drollinger’s ministry is the belief that political leaders have an important role in shaping our society, and that their spiritual foundation is critical to their decision-making. Drollinger’s message emphasizes the importance of aligning our words with God’s Word, and that this is especially important for leaders who influence the direction of our country.

In a recent commentary, Drollinger wrote, “Our speech reveals the condition of our hearts, and our words have immense power to build up or tear down.” He focused specifically on the use of words in the context of political discourse, and how the misuse of language can contribute to division and conflict.

Drollinger also pointed out that the Bible has much to say about the power of words. In Proverbs 18:21, we read that “death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” Similarly, James 1:26 reminds us that “If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.”

Ultimately, Drollinger’s ministry is a call to all believers to be mindful of our speech, to guard our hearts, and to align our words with the truth of God’s Word. “If our speech were measured by God’s standards,” Drollinger writes, “we would have fewer slip-ups and our communication would be more effective, our relationships more meaningful, and our society more harmonious.”

As believers, we should strive to follow Drollinger’s example and take seriously the call to let our speech be “always gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.” (Colossians 4:6) May we be intentional in our use of language, speaking the truth in love and building others up in their faith.
