This measure represents a major departure from the decades-old policy of taxing Social Security benefits.

Social Security is a retirement support program that can be applied for starting at age 62, with benefits that increase as you wait to collect them, up to age 70.

However, taxation of Social Security income began in 1984 when President Ronald Reagan signed the legislation.

Currently, seniors receiving Social Security income are required to pay taxes on 50% of the program's income, with some cases as high as 85% depending on certain thresholds.

Seniors are an important demographic needed for Trump to win the next election.

That proposal came shortly after Trump called on hospitality workers to end the tip tax.

At a June rally in Las Vegas, Trump declared his intention to exclude federal taxes from tips. Nevada, where the rally took place, is one of the biggest battleground states and has the highest concentration of tipped workers in the US.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are more than two million waiters and waitresses in the country alone.
