Shocking videos released by the Columbus Division of Police have revealed a harrowing exchange of gunfire that left an Amazon security guard dead and an officer injured.

On Sunday at approximately 6 p.m., Columbus police pursued the vehicle of 22-year-old Ali Hamsa Yusuf after a shooting occurred at a local Amazon warehouse. Officers managed to surround Yusuf's car at the intersection of Georgesville and Clime Road, but subsequent dashcam footage captured the alarming moment Yusuf exited the vehicle and immediately began firing at the officers inside was behind him.

The sound of gunfire echoed alongside the moans of a male officer who had been hit by a bullet. Despite the dangerous situation, the injured officer, along with another colleague, bravely disembarked from their vehicle to return fire. Footage from the officer's body camera showed the driver's side window shattered by one of the bullets.

Yusuf, relentless in his assault on the officers, sprinted uphill into a HomeBuys car park as he continued to fire at his pursuers. The officers returned fire, causing Yusuf's final collapse on the hill. The entire exchange of gunfire, starting with Yusuf's initial shot, lasted just eight seconds.

After the shooting, the injured officer learned that he, too, had been shot. “I'm hit,” he can be heard saying on the body cam footage. “104, I've been hit by a bullet.” Despite those distressing words, and after several officers checked his condition, he insisted he was “good.” They saw no visible signs of bleeding, but urged him to seek medical attention as a precaution.

The injured officer was later taken to Grant Medical Center in stable condition and later released. Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant acknowledged that the officer's bulletproof vest effectively prevented the gunshot from inflicting a more serious wound.

Yusuf, however, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 6.57pm after being taken to Doctors West Hospital.

This tragic shootout with police was sparked by an earlier shooting incident at Amazon's CMH5 distribution center located west of Columbus. Yusuf, employed as a security guard through an outside contractor, had arrived at the facility at approximately 4:45 p.m., armed with a gun. Local West Jefferson officers responded to the incident as more than 100 employees were present at the warehouse facility. Although Yusuf fired a single shot, causing minor property damage, fortunately no individuals were injured during this initial altercation.

Witness accounts varied as to the number of shots fired inside the facility. A 911 caller reported hearing gunshots inside the building, accompanied by the sound of a woman screaming. Shortly after, people began to evacuate the premises. Another 911 caller, who identified himself as an Amazon employee, described Yusuf as his “apprentice” and revealed that Yusuf had fired two shots in his direction, both of which missed.

This serious incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face on a daily basis, while underscoring the importance of maintaining a safe work environment. As investigations into the incident continue, authorities are working to piece together a full understanding of the events that transpired that fateful day.
