Grindavík, Iceland – A volcanic eruption has rocked the southwestern Icelandic town of Grindavík, prompting the evacuation of residents who had recently returned to their homes after an earlier eruption. The eruption occurred early Sunday morning, according to Iceland's weather office, which reported that the lava flow was visible from “both sides of the defenses that have been built north of Grindavík.”
A Coast Guard helicopter conducted an aerial survey of the eruption site and captured revealing photographs showing lava flowing towards Grindavík, about 450 meters away from the town. The Met Office confirmed that this latest eruption followed a series of strong earthquakes that began in the early hours of the morning. These earthquakes were located in the Sundhnúksgígar crater, north of Grindavík, with the largest measuring approximately 3.5 on the magnitude scale.
Prior to the eruption, weather officials had detected significant seismic activity in the vicinity, leading to concerns that an eruption was imminent. In November, about 4,000 residents of Grindavík were evacuated due to tens of thousands of earthquakes that occurred in the area, indicating a high probability of an eruption. Recent weeks had seen some residents return home as the government worked to build a protective barrier several kilometers long to protect the city from future eruptions.

However, on Saturday, authorities issued an evacuation order for Grindavík once again due to lava advancing towards the town. As the lava continued its course, workers were seen moving construction equipment out of harm's way. Iceland's weather office said the eruption took place southeast of Hagafell, a mountain located on the Reykjanes peninsula.

The recent eruption serves as a reminder of the ongoing volcanic activity on the island. It poses significant challenges for the residents of Grindavík and the authorities who strive to ensure their safety. Scientists will closely monitor the site of the eruption to gauge its intensity and potential impact on surrounding areas.
As the situation remains fluid, residents are asked to follow the directions of local officials and be prepared to take the necessary steps to ensure their safety.
