VIDEO: Bystander chases and tackles drunk driver fleeing car crash that killed police officer

A drunk driver fleeing a car crash that killed an off-duty police officer was chased and tackled to the ground by a bystander, and caught on video.

Euless Police Detective Alex Cervantes was killed when Dylan Molina ran a red light in November 2021 and crashed his rented Jeep into the sedan Cervantes was driving. The officer’s wife was sitting in the passenger seat and their two young children were sitting in the back seat. They survived the crash but were injured.

Video of the incident was released on Wednesday.

The video showed onlookers reacting to the car crash before a visibly confused Molina tries to run away.

A bystander chases him before Molina falls and appears to hit his head with landscaping cement blocks.

“Stay right there you motherfucker! See what you’ve done?!” the good samaritan told him.

Investigators said the man had been drinking at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop before the crash and was served eight shots of Red Bull vodka over a period of about three hours before leaving the bar.

Molina was initially charged with intoxication manslaughter and three counts of aggravated assault. He later accepted a plea deal and pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

Cala Richardson, the 26-year-old bartender who served Molina, has been charged with a misdemeanor for having consumed too much alcohol. Security video obtained by police clearly showed the man stumbling into the bar before leaving.

Molina was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Priscilla Cervantes responded to the ruling in an interview with KDFW-TV.

“Alex won’t be coming back, but at least he’s behind bars and he can’t hurt another family like he did ours,” she said.

An American dies in a drunk driving incident every 52 minutes on average, or approximately 10,000 fatalities each year in the US
