The Oakland Police Officers Association (POA) has called for the resignation of Mayor Sheng Thao immediatelyciting a severe lack of resources to deal with rising crime in the city.

POA Chairman Huy Nguyen made the demand during a press conference on Tuesday, highlighting what he described as multiple failures under Thao's leadership, including inadequate police resources and a budget crisis.

Nguyen criticized Thao for his administration's handling of crime and the impact of an ongoing FBI investigation, which he said has hampered the city's functionality. “Every day, our citizens feel the tragedies. They can't leave their house or walk the streets of Oakland, calling 911 and not getting the services they need,” Nguyen said.

According to Nguyen, the understaffed police department struggles to respond to emergency calls effectively, with officers facing slower response times due to scarce resources.

In response, Mayor Thao issued a video statement stating that crime rates in Oakland have decreased. “It's unfortunate that the POA is obviously playing politics,” said Thao, who called for unity and pointed to his administration's efforts, including new police academies and saving 80 police jobs .

Despite Thao's claims, the POA argues that these measures are insufficient. “This is a time to invest more in the city, hire more police officers, retain police officers and fix the crime problem,” said POA Vice President Tim Dolan.

A recall effort against Thao is underway, but the POA has urged him to resign to speed up the process.

“If he resigns this week, the election will take place in November, instead of waiting for the recall. Then it will go to April and the process is longer when we have to work immediately on the new budget.” – Huy Nguyen, president of the Oakland Police Officers Association
