The math teacher became “Jeopardy!” champion arrested on allegations of child pornography

A math teacher who previously appeared on 'Jeopardy!' faces charges of child pornography.

Winston Nguyen turned himself in Thursday after it was reported that he was exchanging photos with minors. He is currently facing charges of using a child in a sexual performance and promoting a sexual performance of a child and others. He is reported to have posed as a teenager on at least 11 separate occasions and is accused of trying to obtain nude photos and the media of “sexual acts”, prosecutors say.

Nguyen allegedly used two SnapChat accounts to exchange messages with the alleged victims, five girls and one boy between the ages of 13 and 15. The children were students enrolled at private schools at Brooklyn Saint Ann's, Poly Prep Country Day School, Berkeley Carroll School and Packer Collegiate Institute. Nguyen himself had been a teacher at Saint Ann's and was actually arrested at the school in Junebut he was released without being charged.

“We agreed to his surrender with prosecutors and detectives,” said Frank Rothman, Nguyen's attorney. “He came forward and will be prosecuted like any other defendant.”

Prosecutors have alleged that the suspect even paid one of the children to send him explicit material and that a search of his devices uncovered “extremely disturbing conduct.”

“[T]the fact that he was a teacher and a trusted figure among students makes these allegations even more troubling.”

This is not Nguyen's first run with the law, however. Before his job as a teacher, he was a home aide who was accused of stealing more than $300,000 from an elderly couple he had been helping. He reportedly spent that money on things like ballet tickets and trips to Florida, authorities said. The district attorney claims Nguyen would consult bank statements to cover his tracks and prevented creditors from contacting the couple.

Nguyen will face arraignment Thursday afternoon and the criminal complaint will go to a grand jury, which will decide whether to indict the former 'Jeopardy!' champion in positions.
