Critics argue that Harris' record contradicts her attempts to position herself as a law-and-order candidate.
Joe Gamaldi, national vice president of the Fraternal Order of Police, said a Harris presidency would be detrimental to public safety because of his vocal advocacy for bail reform.
Gamaldi highlighted Harris' involvement in funding the release of individuals accused of serious crimes, including murderers, rapists and violent criminals.
Reflecting on the consequences of bail reform, Gamaldi highlighted its failure in urban communities, which led to an increase in crime rates. He stressed that Harris' position on bail reform raises concerns, especially after witnessing the detrimental impacts on public safety.
Joseph Imperatrice, founder of Blue Lives Matter NYC, echoed Gamaldi's sentiment, emphasizing the need for a leader who prioritizes keeping criminals behind bars.
Imperatrice criticized Harris for helping free “bad guys” during the riots, questioning his commitment to accountability and criminal justice.
Critics noted Harris' shift toward progressive policies and leniency on crime, marking a departure from his previous roles as district attorney and attorney general.
Charles Stimson, a senior legal partner at the Heritage Foundation, compared Harris' rhetoric to calls for defunding the police, suggesting a troubling pattern of anti-law enforcement sentiment.
Stimson warned against efforts by politicians to “reimagine” the criminal justice system, calling such approaches pro-criminal.
He criticized Harris for applauding defunding initiatives, highlighting his support for redirecting funds away from law enforcement agencies.
Harris' endorsement of the Minnesota Freedom Fund, which was aimed at rescuing protesters, drew particular scrutiny after reports revealed the funds were used to free people accused of violent crimes.
The Fund's support for people involved in serious crimes raised questions about Harris' judgment and priorities.
As Harris positions himself for a presidential bid, his association with controversial bail reform and leniency initiatives continues to fuel debate within law enforcement circles.
