Melvindale Police Officer Mohamed Said, 23, was killed in the line of duty while responding to a call of suspicious activity near a car wash at Oakwood and Dix.

The shooting happened in the 17000 block of Clarann ​​Street in Melvindale shortly after 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Michael Lopez, 44, was arrested Monday in southwest Detroit in connection with Said's death.

Said approached Lopez, who later ran away when the officer tried to make contact with him, according to authorities. A chase ensued, during which Said tased Lopez. Lopez then pulled out a firearm and shot the officer.

A manhunt involving the ATF, Michigan State Police, Melvindale Police, the National Police Defense Foundation and US Marshals began shortly after the shooting. The agencies offered a $37,500 reward for information leading to Lopez's arrest.

Lopez has a criminal record that includes carjacking and resisting arrest, officials said.

Officer Said was a member of the Melvindale Police Department for one year. His friend, Mohamed Alomari, expressed his heartbreak and that “it's hard for us, especially for a young man who didn't get to see the things he wanted to do in his life, get married and have children.”
