Upon arriving at the scene, officers witnessed the gunman, identified as 36-year-old Mdiouga Gaye, running toward a victim. NYPD Deputy Chief Ruel Stephenson said the situation was chaotic and fast-paced, with officers repeatedly ordering the man to drop the knife.
Despite commands, the suspect persisted in his attempt to attack the victim and even lunged at a second officer.
The officer attempted to subdue him with a Taser, which was ineffective.
When the suspect swung the knife at the officer, the officer fired, striking the man in the buttocks.
As a result of the incident, the 36-year-old suspect was arrested and taken to hospital. Police recovered a knife at the scene.
Officials revealed he had two previous encounters with law enforcement related to mental health issues.
Deputy Chief Stephenson indicated that an investigation is ongoing to determine the factors that led to the altercation between the suspect and four other people.
The entire incident, from the officers seeing the gunman to the shooting, took 34 seconds.
