The 90-year-old senator has faced health challenges in the recent past, and has been absent from the Senate for nearly three months due to conditions including shingles, Ramsay Hunt syndrome and encephalitis.

Upon his return, he appeared to have memory discrepancies, claiming to a reporter that he had not been absent. There were also instances where she appeared disoriented during some Senate hearings.

Both Democratic and Republican circles have discussed, with varying degrees of openness, the possibility of his resignation.

Senator Feinstein has given power to her daughter, Katherine Feinstein, who is 66 years old. The move, the New York Times reported Thursday, is in part to help with legal disputes surrounding the estate of Feinstein’s late husband, Richard Blum.

One such dispute sees Katherine, Feinstein’s only daughter, at odds with Blum’s three daughters over the ownership of a luxury beach house, a property owned by Senator Feinstein.

In another lawsuit, the two sides are contesting Richard Blum’s life insurance. Senator Feinstein says she needs it to meet her growing medical expenses, according to The Times.
