The important email in question reveals that Dr. Fauci had been briefed on gain-of-function research, a controversial area of study in the medical field that involves manipulating pathogens to increase their ability to infect, at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. This flies in the face of Fauci’s previous statements under oath, which have persistently downplayed or denied any substantial involvement or knowledge of these studies.

This research could be the key to understanding the origins of the COVID-19 virus, making Dr. Fauci’s apparent duplicity a major cause for concern. Additionally, it is worth noting that in the US, gain-of-function research had been subject to a federal funding hiatus from 2014 to 2017, emphasizing the controversial nature of these studies.
During a committee hearing, Senator Paul had directly asked Dr. Fauci if the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), which Fauci leads, had ever funded gain-of-function research in Wuhan. Dr. Fauci responded in the negative, stating, “The NIH has never funded and does not now fund gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.”

But the released email appears to counter that claim, providing what Senator Paul believes is tangible evidence that Dr. Fauci did not present an accurate account of his knowledge and involvement to the Senate. Thus, Senator Paul has filed a criminal referral with the Department of Justice against Dr. Fauci for lying to Congress.
