CNN reports that President Biden has nominated criminal neocon Elliott Abrams to a position on the US Public Diplomacy Advisory Commission, which in accordance with The US State Department is responsible for “assessing activities aimed at understanding, informing and influencing foreign audiences” and pays “close attention” to the US government’s official foreign propaganda arm, the US Agency for Global Media.
Usually, when you hear someone called a “neocon,” it’s not a strictly accurate description from a technical standpoint, and it’s often used to mean just “warmonger,” but Abrams actually is. a neoconservative ideologue of the PNAC with deep ties to the old-school neoconservatives of the 1970s, and has helped promote violent US imperialism in Latin America and the Middle East for decades.
In addition to acting as the Trump administration’s special representative for Iran and Venezuela (two of the nations where Trump’s foreign policy he was in his the majority killer), Abrams is probably best known for confessing to his role in the Iran-Contra criminal cover-up during the Reagan administration. CNN, notoriously reluctant to criticize both US foreign policy and Democratic presidential administrations, was surprisingly critical on this point in its report on Biden’s nomination of Abrams to the post.
In an article entitled “Biden names controversial former Trump appointee to Public Diplomacy Commission”, CNN’s Jack Forrest writes the following:
Elliott Abrams, who has served in three Republican administrations, most recently served as the Trump administration’s special envoy to Iran and Venezuela, where he was then tasked with leading the campaign to replace Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro .
The privileged Republican’s long foreign policy history is marked by a guilty plea in 1991 to withholding information about the Iran-Contra affair that cost him. two misdemeanorstwo years of probation and 100 hours of community service, although his crimes were later pardoned by President George HW Bush.
The Iran-Contra covert operation, which took place during Abrams’ time as assistant secretary of state in the Reagan administration, involved the financing of anti-communist rebels in Nicaragua using proceeds from arms sales to Iran despite a congressional ban on such funding. .
Again in his role under former President Ronald Reagan, Abrams also came under fire a Human Rights Watch report for his attempts in Senate testimony in February 1982 to play down reports of the massacre of 1,000 people by US-trained and equipped military units in the Salvadoran city of El Mozote in December 1981. the biggest mass murder in the recent history of Latin America. He insisted the reported death toll was “unbelievable” and “prodigious praise” for the military battalion behind the mass killings, positions he doubled down on when exhibited during a 2019 House Foreign Affairs Committee Hearing from Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minnesota, who used his history in Latin America to cast doubt on his credibility.
When you’re so gross that even CNN is disgusted by you, you’re a special kind of gross.
As Forrest pointed out, this would be the fourth presidential administration Abrams has been a part of, despite being an avowed thief and despite pushing for bloodshed at every opportunity in some of the most notorious criminal actions of the American empire . Abrams is such a cold killer that he is openly admitted during a 1985 conference that the purpose of helping the Contras in Nicaragua was to “allow the people fighting on our side to use more violence,” and has promoted US military violence against Iraq, Syria and Iran with remarkable force throughout his career. The fact that someone so tyrannical, so corrupt, and so unscrupulous continues to be appointed to positions related to US foreign policy tells you all you need to know about the nature of US foreign policy.
It’s actually a damning indictment of our entire civilization that swamp monsters like Elliott Abrams remain beloved members of society instead of vilified outcasts who can’t safely show their faces in public. They should be kicked out of every city they try to enter and unable to secure even entry level jobs working for minimum wage but instead are employed as high profile experts, think tankers and political officials who offer expertise in some of the most important aspects. issues in the world
