Mitt Romney might be in trouble. Over 60 Utah Republican Lawmakers are endorsing Utah State House Speaker Brad Wilson who is considering challenging Mitt Romney for his senate seat.

Fox News reported: More than 60 Republican lawmakers from Utah are pushing to end Sen. Mitt Romney’s career on Capitol Hill. Utah state House Speaker Brad Wilson has taken the first steps toward challenging Romney, the Republicans’ 2012 presidential nominee, by forming a Senate exploratory committee in April.

The committee on Thursday announced that Wilson’s possible run is already being endorsed by three-quarters of his GOP colleagues in the statehouse’s lower chamber and two-thirds of Republicans in the Utah Senate. “I am honored and encouraged to have the support of so many leaders from all corners of this great state,” Wilson said. “Utah needs a bold, conservative fighter in the U.S. Senate and I am humbled at the support and encouragement we’ve received so quickly.”

Romney voted to convict Donald Trump twice. The Hill reported: Wilson is considering challenging Romney, who has filed for a second term serving the U.S. Senate in 2024. Romney, a conservative lawmaker, has been a vocal critic of former President Trump and has exhibited an independent voting streak throughout his first term. Romney was the sole Republican senator who voted to convict Trump the first time he was impeached. Romney voted again to convict the former president again when he was impeached after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. He also said he did not vote for Trump in the 2020 election.

Romney narrowly avoided being censured at the Utah GOP convention in 2021, following his vote to impeach Trump. The measure — which cited Romney’s conviction votes and was filled with conspiracy theories about Biden and the election — failed 711-798. Romney earlier was censured by a Utah county Republican party.

Is Romney in trouble?

It seems that Mitt Romney, the former Republican presidential nominee and current Senator from Utah, is facing opposition from within his own party. Over 60 Republican lawmakers in Utah are backing Utah State House Speaker Brad Wilson, who is considering challenging Romney for his seat in the Senate.

The move to potentially oust Romney has been gaining traction, with Wilson forming a Senate exploratory committee in April. The committee has announced that Wilson’s possible run has already garnered the support of three-quarters of his GOP colleagues in the state’s lower chamber and two-thirds of Republicans in the Utah Senate. This level of support indicates that there is significant dissatisfaction with Romney among Utah Republicans.

One of the major reasons for this discontent is Romney’s voting record and his stance on former President Donald Trump. Romney has distinguished himself as a vocal critic of Trump, even going against party lines to vote for Trump’s impeachment. He was the only Republican senator to vote to convict Trump during his first impeachment trial and repeated the action for the second impeachment trial following the January 6th attack on the Capitol. Romney also publicly stated that he did not vote for Trump in the 2020 election.

These actions have not gone unnoticed by Utah Republicans, and Romney has faced backlash within his own party as a result. He narrowly escaped censure at the Utah GOP convention in 2021, where his vote to impeach Trump was a major point of contention. The measure to censure him, which included conspiracy theories about President Biden and the election, failed by a narrow margin. Romney had also previously been censured by a Utah county Republican party.

The support for Wilson’s potential challenge to Romney suggests that there is a desire within the Utah Republican party for a more conservative and Trump-aligned representative in the Senate. Wilson’s emphasis on being a “bold, conservative fighter” resonates with many Republicans who feel that Romney’s independent streak and criticism of Trump do not align with the values of the party.

As the 2024 Senate race approaches, it will be interesting to see how this internal party struggle plays out. Will Romney be able to hold onto his seat despite the opposition from within his own party, or will Wilson’s challenge prove successful? Only time will tell, but one thing is clear: the battle for Utah’s Senate seat is heating up, and Romney is facing a tough fight to maintain his position.
