NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell is leaving the company after an investigation found he had an inappropriate relationship with an employee.
Shell issued a statement on Sunday about his immediate departure from the company.
“Today is my last day as CEO of NBCUniversal. I had an inappropriate relationship with a woman at the company, which I deeply regret,” Shell said. “I am very sorry to have let my colleagues at Comcast and NBCUniversal down, they are the most talented people in the business and the opportunity to work with them for the past 19 years has been a privilege.”
The statement noted that NBCUniversal’s parent company, Comcast, and Shell had “mutually agreed” that the CEO would leave the company immediately following an “external counsel-led investigation into a complaint of misconduct.”
“Even those inside Universal were surprised by the announcement. ‘We’re dealing with this in real time,’ says one executive. Another source says Mike Cavanaugh, Comcast’s chairman, is expected to take a biggest role yet.” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Shell took over as CEO of NBCUniversal on January 1, 2020.

Previously, Shell was president of NBCUniversal Film and Entertainment, president of Comcast Programming Group, president of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group and CEO of Gemstar TV Guide International.

Shell earned his master’s degree in Business Administration from Harvard University and his bachelor’s degree in Economics and Applied Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley.
