In a shocking and tragic turn of events, a 22-year-old woman, Kayla Kenisha Brown, is facing murder, kidnapping and carjacking charges after a disturbing carjacking incident in Washington DC on Monday that led to the death of a 55-year-old person. -old woman.

The disturbing chain of events began at 1:11 p.m. Monday at Washington Hospital Center, according to a press release from the Metropolitan Police Department.

On that fateful afternoon, a woman parked a Mazda SUV in front of the hospital with her 55-year-old mother sitting next to her in the passenger seat. The driver momentarily exited the vehicle to retrieve a wheelchair for her mother, leaving the engine running.

Brown, accompanied by her family, left the hospital and took the opportunity to get into the unattended Mazda SUV and drive off with the unsuspecting passenger still inside.

Just 18 minutes later, the stolen vehicle drove into a building at 601 D Street, Northwest. Amazingly, the structure housed the District of Columbia Attorney General's Office and the Washington DCUS Attorney's Office, as the Metropolitan Police Department revealed to USA TODAY on Tuesday.

Attempting to flee the scene of the accident, the suspect abandoned the vehicle but was immediately apprehended by a Metropolitan Police Department captain.

The passenger in the stolen vehicle, identified as Leslie Marie Gaines, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where she was tragically pronounced dead.

Brown is now at the center of a legal maelstrom, accused of murder, kidnapping and carjacking. The details of his legal representation remain unclear at this time.

Amid ongoing investigations, authorities have announced that the Chief Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of Gaines' untimely death.
