Half of Americans see mass migration as 'critical threat', most want more wall: poll

-

Half of Americans believe large numbers of migrants entering the country pose a “critical threat” to U.S. interests, and a majority favor expanding the U.S.-Mexico border wall, find a survey of the Chicago Council.

Fifty percent of Americans believe that large numbers of migrants and refugees entering the US are a “critical threat” to the nation, a poll published Friday by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs found. The poll also found broad support for a border wall and the use of US troops to curb illegal immigration.

The most dramatic increase in concern comes from Republicans, with 83% saying mass migration is a critical threat. The poll found that 45 percent of independents and just 27 percent of Democrats share the same concern.

“American concern about the large numbers of immigrants and refugees arriving in the United States has been increasing in recent years,” the survey states. “This reflects a dramatic increase in the number of encounters between the US Border Patrol and migrants seeking to enter the United States across the US-Mexico border.”

The poll found other areas of support for hawkish border policies, with 55% of Americans in favor of building a border wall between the US and Mexico to reduce the number of illegal migrant crossings and 53% favor using US troops to help. avoid the steps of migrants. The bulk of support, again, came from respondents who identified as Republicans.

“In addition to being more likely to support deporting undocumented immigrants from the U.S., Republicans are much more likely to support using the U.S. military to prevent additional unauthorized migration,” he says the survey

However, the Chicago Council poll found that most Americans are not pessimistic in all areas of immigration enforcement. Sixty-five percent of respondents said they oppose mass detention camps for illegal immigrants, and a plurality, 44 percent, said “legal immigration to the United States should be kept at current”.

The survey was conducted online from June 21 to July 1 and included a sample of 2,106 adults. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points.

Border Patrol agents have encountered more than seven million non-citizens crossing the country illegally since President Joe Biden took office. seconds to the latest data from Customs and Border Protection. Big cities like New York, Chicago and Denver have spent a lot 1 billion dollars to house and feed thousands of arriving asylum seekers.

A Harvard-Harris poll released earlier this week found massive support for tighter border measures, with 73% of respondents favoring a policy goal to “seal the border and stop the migrant invasion.” The vast majority of voters in that same poll, 69 percent, said they felt Vice President Kamala was in favor of “open borders.”

The Harvard-Harris survey and previous surveys indicate that Americans view border security and other immigration-related issues as one of the most important issues facing the country.
