Yesterday, the Washington Post lamented that some states in this country still “foolishly” ask a governor to follow laws written by the legislature. In case you didn’t know, defending a State Constitution has been redefined as “asking for permission:”

WaPo is concerned that states not allowing their governors unchecked and unlimited power poses a serious threat to our democracy. In tough times like these, I’m glad there’s California. Its governor will not be bound by small inconveniences such as the Constitution or the will of the people.
Fortunately for Gavin Newsom, California is in such a state of disrepair that he can always claim an “emergency.” Whether it’s a public health issue, wildfires, or winter storms, Gavin has mismanaged California so badly that “emergency” is the only way to describe it. Not that Gavin does anything about it. To him, “emergency” just means blaming Red States and demanding money from Biden.
Gavin Newsom has been busy doing two things lately: getting a case of Covid after getting his monthly booster and tweeting what a sad life all the people who escaped his state to Florida are having. When Governor DeSantis ended Disney’s special privileges to sabotage the Florida law, Gavin had a lot to say:

Of course, no one penalized Disney for “expressing themselves.” Governor DeSantis ended a business relationship with Disney for his attempt to sabotage a state law – a law that was passed with overwhelming support. But at the time, Governor Newsom thought that punishing companies for their political activity is very “authoritarian” and not “business friendly.” That was until one company spoke out about something that is near and dear to Gavin’s heart: abortion.
When Walgreens decided to stop shipping abortion pills to some states (most of these states prohibit it by law) Gavin’s anger was swift:
California will not do business with @walgreens, or any company that hides from extremists and puts women’s lives at risk.

Science is silent on how no taking an abortion pill in the first weeks of pregnancy puts the woman’s life at risk. But Gavin’s goal is to save as many lives as possible, and for that reason alone like they did with the covid shots who do nothing, the state of California wants to put the taking of abortion pills in the health regime of its citizens. And that’s where Walgreens is in direct violation, and Gavin just won’t have it.
Yesterday, Newsom announced that the $54 million contract between the state and Walgreens will not be renewed. Here Here’s what Gavin had to say:
“California will not stand by while corporations give in to extremists and cut off critical access to reproductive care and freedom. California is on track to be the fourth largest economy in the world, and we will use our market power to defend the right to choose”.
When a conservative state ends a business relationship with a company that repudiates the state’s values, that’s “an authoritarian regime” at work. But when does California exactly the sameit’s just “taking advantage of their economic power”.
The good news is that California won’t really be on track to be the fourth largest economy. They are on their way to being so the largest desert in the country. Walgreens is leaving there anyway, so they probably don’t care.
