Upper middle class is an attainable upper class space for members of the middle/working class. It’s what they strive for, as the upper class is out of reach or sight (thanks Paul Fussell). They are aspirational and mass media aimed at this class and those who aspire to it use these models
It was a small class, but it has grown over time as our economy shrinks, the broad middle class and downward mobility become workers, but many become UMCs. This is a huge trend since the 1970s. Its golden age for security and purchasing power was in the late 1980s and 1990s.
The UMC is full of single-income households where the mother could work but has opted out. The NY Times first noted this in 2003, reflecting the 1990s trend of successful mom-opted-out homes, but they were still UMC homes.
Viewers could see herself as an intelligent and beautiful woman with a successful and desirable husband who conversed with her as an equal about interesting things. Don’t just whip up candies to show off. Ward played adults with serious things to do (and a bohemian).
