The FBI has been actively investigating the attempted murder, which left one protester dead and two others seriously injured, before the assailant, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot dead by the Secret Service.

After the assassination attempt, Trump, with a bleeding ear, recounted the experience and claimed to have been “shot with a bullet that went through the top of my right ear” on his Truth platform Social. He vividly described the intense moment, recalling hearing “a whisper, gunshots and immediately felt the bullet break through the skin.”

In a further development, a week after the violent incident, the Trump campaign released a medical note from former White House physician and Texas representative Ronny Jackson, confirming that Trump received a gunshot wound to his right ear, narrowly avoiding a more serious injury. Jackson's note assured that Trump “was doing well and recovering as expected.”

However, during his testimony before the House Judiciary Committee, Wray shared that it is still unclear whether Trump's injury was inflicted by a bullet or shrapnel.

When questioned by California representative Kevin Kiley about the proximity of the assailant's shot to Trump, Wray revealed that “a bullet or a piece of shrapnel is what grazed. [Trump’s] ear.”
