Fauci Knew About Gain-of-Function Research Underway at Wuhan Lab: Newly Revealed Emails

The House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic released an email Thursday that raises concerns about Anthony Fauci, former adviser to the White House’s coronavirus task force and director of the National Allergy Institute and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The email, shared on the subcommittee’s Twitter account, indicates Fauci was aware of gain-of-function research being conducted in Wuhan, China.

Dated February 1, 2020, the email contains a summary of a meeting attended by Fauci and other scientists, which discussed the origins of the coronavirus. In his summary, Fauci mentions scientists expressing concern about a paper by an Indian research group. The paper suggested that there were unusual mutations in the virus, which would be highly unlikely to have occurred naturally in bats. The scientists suspected that these mutations might have been introduced deliberately.

Fauci, referring to the Indian scientists, noted: “They were concerned that when they looked at the sequences of several nCoV isolates, there were mutations in the virus that would be more unusual to have evolved naturally in bats and that there It was suspected that this mutation was intentionally inserted.”

“Suspicion was heightened by the fact that scientists at Wuhan University were known to have been working on gain-of-function experiments to determine the molecular mechanisms associated with bat viruses adapting to human infection and the outbreak it originated in Wuhan,” Fauci added. .

The email notes that the conversation did not involve assumptions of foul play or culpability on anyone’s part.

Along with the email disclosure, the subcommittee has sent a letter to Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra demanding answers regarding the email’s content and requesting documentation related to the conference at which Fauci’s email is referenced.

Subcommittee Chairman Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-OH) challenged Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra on Dr. Fauci’s email and the importance of congressional testimony he gave that can be interpreted as very misleading about whether he “wins” or not. The “function” research was conducted at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) had a heated exchange with the nation’s former top Covid doc in July 2021 over the gain-of-function issue.

“Dr. Fauci, as you know, it is a crime to lie to Congress,” Senator Paul said. “Section 1001 of the US Penal Code creates a felony and a five-year penalty for lying to Congress.”

“Senator Paul, you don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“In your last trip to our committee on May 11, you stated that the NIH has never funded and now does not fund gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology,” Paul continued. “And yet the gain-of-function research was done entirely at the Wuhan Institute by Dr. Shi and was funded by the NIH.”

“I would like to ask for unanimous consent to insert into the record the Wuhan virology paper entitled ‘Discovery of a rich gene pool of coronaviruses related to bat SARS,'” he continued. “Please send a copy of the magazine article to Dr. Fauci. In this article, Dr. Shi credits the NIH and lists the actual number of the grant she was awarded by the NIH. In this article, she took two genes from Bat Coronavirus, genes spike, and combined them with the SARS-related backbone to create new viruses not found in nature. These lab-created viruses had to be shown to replicate in humans.”

“These experiments combined genetic information from different coronaviruses that infect animals, but not humans, to create new artificial viruses capable of infecting human cells,” added Paul. “Viruses that in nature only infect animals were manipulated in the Wuhan lab to achieve the function of infecting humans. This research fits the definition of research that the NIH said was subject to the pause on 2014-2017, a pause in gain-of-function funding.”

“But the NIH didn’t recognize that that defines it, and it never came under any scrutiny,” he continued. “Dr. Richard Ebright, a molecular biologist at Rutgers, described this research in Wuhan as “The Wuhan laboratory used NIH funding to construct SARS-related chimeric coronaviruses capable of infecting human and animal cells from laboratory”. This is high-risk research that creates new potential pandemic pathogens, potential pandemic pathogens that only exist in the laboratory, not in nature. This research agrees, these are Dr. Ebright’s words, this research agrees, in fact, it represents the definition of gain-of-function research done entirely in Wuhan, for which there was supposed to be a federal break. Dr. Fauci, knowing it’s a crime to lie to Congress, wants to retract the his May 11 statement in which he claimed that the NIH never funded the functional research gain in Wuhan? he asked.

“Senator Paul, I have never lied to Congress and I do not retract that statement,” Fauci denied. “That document you refer to was judged by qualified personnel up and down the chain to not be a gain of function. What was – “

“So you…” Paul interjected.

“Let me finish!” Fauci exploded.

“So you take an animal virus and increase transmissibility to humans, you’re saying that’s not gain of function?” Paul asked.

“Yes, that is correct,” Fauci continued. “And Senator Paul, he doesn’t know what he’s talking about, frankly. And I mean it officially. You don’t know what you’re talking about. Okay, you have a person . . .”

“The NIH,” Paul began.

“Can I answer?” Fauci chimed in.

“That’s your definition that you wrote,” Paul said. “He says that scientific research that increases transmissibility between mammals is a gain of function. They took animal viruses that only occur in animals and increase their transmissibility to humans. How can you say that’s not gain of function?”

“It’s not,” Fauci said.

“It’s a dance, and you’re dancing around it, because you’re trying to obscure responsibility for 4 million people dying worldwide from a pandemic,” Paul said.

“I have to — well, now you’re onto something,” Fauci replied. “If the point you’re making is that the grant that was funded as an EcoHealth sub-award in Wuhan created SARS-CoV-2, that’s where you’re getting at, let me finish.”

“We don’t know if it came from the lab, but all the evidence points to it coming from the lab, and there will be accountability for those who funded the lab, including yourself,” Paul continued.

“I’m totally upset…” Fauci objected.

“This committee will allow the witness to respond,” said an unidentified member of the body.

“I am totally disgusted by the lie that you are now spreading, Senator, because if you look at the viruses that were used in the experiments that were given in the annual reports that were published in the literature, it is molecularly impossible,” Fauci said.

“No one is saying these viruses caused it,” Paul clarified. “No one is alleging that these viruses caused the pandemic. What we are alleging is that gain of function research was going on in that lab and the NIH funded it.”

“That’s not…” Fauci denied.

“You can’t run away from it,” Paul said. “Stick to your definition and you are obfuscating the truth.”

“I’m not obfuscating the truth. You’re the only one,” Fauci said before someone commented that Senator Paul’s time was up. Fauci had time to respond.

“Let me finish,” Fauci said. “I want everyone to understand that if you look at these viruses, and this is judged by a qualified virologist, an evolutionary biologist, these viruses are molecularly impossible to produce SARS-CoV-2.”

This directly contradicts the admission made in Fauci’s new email.

Dr. Ebright, a molecular biologist at Rutgers University, explains how the new documents show that Dr. Fauci and Dr. Francis Collins have been “untruthful” about funding gain-of-function research.

The materials further reveal that the grants also supported the construction, in Wuhan, of novel MERS-related chimeric coronaviruses that combined edge genes from one MERS-related coronavirus with genetic information from another MERS-related coronavirus. MERS. The documents make clear that claims by NIH Director Francis Collins and NIAID Director Anthony Fauci that NIH did not support gain-of-function research or potential amelioration of pandemic pathogens in WIV are false .

According to the newly disclosed email, Dr. Fauci has misled Congress. It will be interesting to see if this translates into more hearings and emails, or if the former top Covid doctor will be held responsible for misleading the American people.
