Who is Nay Benz? Teenage rapper, “gang leader” from the Bronx

BRONX – Fox 5 got an exclusive look at one of New York City members of the most violent gangsamong them alleged gang leader and would-be mock rapper, Nay Benz.

Nay Benz, 18, whose real name is Nadine Asamoah, is the alleged head honcho of the Slattery Ganga notorious group from the Fordham section of the Bronx known for terrorizing their community.

After being released from Brookwood Upstate Juvenile Facility a few months ago, Benz was arrested in July after a 176-count conspiracy indictment.

The Slattery Gang, also known as “Slaughtery” and “S-block,” is responsible for more than a dozen shootings and attempted murders, according to the NYPD.

Specifically, Benz is accused of using her music to promote violence by recounting alleged crimes.

Benz's music has garnered millions of hits online and many critics consider her one of the first in the rap scene.

“Jail Freestyle” and “Don't Run,” which he says he wrote and recorded from prison, are among his most popular songs, with more than a million views on YouTube combined.

In one April interview with “What NYC Sounds Like,” a music commentary platform, Benz talked about getting out of prison and what plans were moving forward.

“All I'm around is love and support,” she said.

When asked what kind of image he was trying to portray, he responded by saying, “It's just me.”

When asked about Slaughtery and the neighborhood he grew up in, he said, “We're the true definition of loyalty here.”

Benz didn't address the violence in his neighborhood, but he did talk briefly about fighting a teenager while in prison.

Authorities say they don't want to stop bootleg rap, which has been blamed for recent violence on the city's streets, but only to stop crime.

All defendants are innocent until proven guilty.

Fox 5 NY's Lisa Evers looks at the hip-hop genre of drill rap that's getting a lot of attention for its growing fan base, as well as the growing number of criminal charges shrouded in some of its most promising artists, even all after they get a recording contract.

“Nineteen of them are trigger pullers, predominately, across the board. They've pulled the trigger more than once,” said Deputy Chief Jason Savino of the NYPD. “It's almost like they're competing with each other to see who can shoot the most times.”

The average age of the suspects is 20, with even teenage girls like Nay Benz involved in the violence.

Not only is the criminal crew accused of shooting their victims, but they also make music to taunt them by describing the attack in detail.

In some cases, members were caught shooting in playgrounds and in front of school buses with children around. In one incident, a 9-year-old boy called 911 for help because he was caught in the line of fire.

After a nearly 12-month investigation, the NPYD put 20 alleged gang members behind bars, including the prominent drill rapper.

The gang was also hit with a 176-count conspiracy indictment, according to Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark.

Charges range from attempted murder to robbery and weapons possession.

“Daylight shooters, you're talking about a 15-year-old girl who let 15 carts out on the street, a 15-year-old girl, that's crazy,” said Deputy Inspector Craig Edelman, commander of the GVSD. “They're shooting at each other with the yellow school bus in between.”
