Presidential candidate and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy applauded Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) after Romney said he would rather support “a few Democrats” over Ramaswamy and former President Trump in the 2024 election.
In a statement emailed to Fox News Digital, a Trump spokesman said: “Voters will not accept the advice of a loser and quitter like Mittens.”
Romney, a former presidential candidate, will not seek re-election in 2024 and announced his retirement from the Senate in September.
“I have spent my last 25 years in public service of one kind or another. At the end of another term, he would be in his mid-eighties. Frankly, it’s time for a new generation of leaders. They are the ones who must make the decisions that will shape the world they will live in,” Romney said in a statement obtained by Fox News Digital in September.
Trump called Romney’s retirement “great news” for the United States, Utah and the Republican Party on TruthSocial shortly after his announcement, NBC News reported at the time. Romney was one of the Republicans who voted twice to impeach the former president.
Romney’s term ends in January 2025.
He was first elected to the Senate from Utah in 2018, winning the GOP primary in a landslide.
But his willingness to reach across the aisle and criticize other national Republicans has caused friction with the Utah GOP. Last month, more than 60 Republican Utah state lawmakers backed Utah House Speaker Brad Wilson to mount a primary challenge against Romney.
In an interview with Fox News, Ramaswamy said Romney’s comments “were not surprising” and that he was “part of the old guard” of the Republican Party.
“The Republican Party is at a crossroads,” Ramaswamy said. “We can continue down Mitt Romney’s path, which is one of weakness and appeasement, or we can choose a new path, one of strength and courage.”
Ramaswamy also said he was confident he could defeat Romney in a primary election.
“I think he would beat Mitt Romney in a landslide,” Ramaswamy said. “The people of Utah are tired of being represented by someone who is more interested in protecting his own political career than fighting for their interests.”
