Disgruntled RINOs Liz Cheney, Chris Christie, and Mitt Romney talk incessantly about Donald Trump's second presidency as the “end of democracy.” I'm trying to add it up.
These last three years have been the most anti-democratic in memory!
Many things stemmed from an overreaction to the COVID pandemic. The closures and masking mandates bordered on tyranny! The government and its complicit “three letter” agency accomplices did everything they could to scare the living socks off the populace!
On the darker side, many people seem to have been maimed by an experimental shot. Many took the injection under protest, claiming that the alternative was job termination. The government, including its deep state associates, pushed private corporations to comply.
Worse, censorship reared its ugly head in a way not seen since World War II. There was even a move to establish a “ministry of truth.” The new claim declared war on “disinformation.” Most strikingly, anything that deviated from the government's narrative was labeled “disinformation.” Those who alleged “misinformation” were branded “conspiracy theorists”.
It sounds dangerously close to a previous government on the other side of the planet. That government explained to the world that they “defend the revolution”. As in “controlling the narrative”. We must not be fooled by the “counter-revolutionaries”, they pointed out.
So if “conspiracy theorists” allege “misinformation” that questions the current system, they will be ridiculed, punished, or worse. Open discussion will not be allowed! After all, it is the system that is under attack!
Where Trump went off track with the political class
Donald Trump was part of this elite ruling class. He had benefited from a bright and insightful father who had carved his place the old-fashioned way. Along the way, the evolution of Donald John Trump can be interpreted in many ways. One thing is certain: he saw a lot. It's called “life experience.”
Analytical by nature, Trump recognized many things that could be done better and for less money. A good example was the US embassy in Jerusalem.
Trump saw the tax system as catering to those who could afford to hire top tax professionals. Through these professionals' innate knowledge of the tax system, affluent Americans were able to reduce their tax exposure. In some cases, drastically. Trump called it “a rigged system.”
Trump was appalled by the greed shown by Fortune 500 companies. By making use of foreign labor, shareholder returns were increased, at the expense of America's blue-collar working class.
Trump always had a problem with illegal immigration. He historically favored a merit-based immigration standard. He openly criticized both Democratic and neocon initiatives to use the immigration system to “recruit future voters” and “capitalize on cheap, undocumented labor costs, here at home.”
“Draining the Swamp:” a monumental undertaking
Trump may have underestimated the sheer depth of the administrative state. During the campaign, he promised to “drain the swamp”. Once the beginning was in action, he knew, to quote Videk Ramaswamy, “when he pulled out the first log, he knew how much was underneath.”
Credit the Heritage Foundation for bringing to America's attention that 95% of federal bureaucrats contributed to the Democratic Party in 2020. Heritage's goal is to replace Democrats in the bureaucracy with Republicans. Ramaswamy proposed to eliminate 75% of the administrative state.
A faster and smoother method can adopt the “Act of Procurement”.This very practical initiative would move the headquarters of a dozen federal agencies to cities closer to high-service areas, such as moving The Bureau of Land Management from Washington to Grand Junction, Colorado. Trump supported the effort by Senators Blackburn and Hawley. The plan was underway in 2019. Then came COVID and the election.
The election sparked a fear of government that America has not endured domestically since the Civil War. January 6th the detainees were reminded that it was Abraham Lincoln who had initially suspended the writ of Habeus Corpus! The suspension was never repealed.
Members of both parties shared the brief period of histrionics that accompanied COVID. Republicans were quicker to take it down. Democrats seem to like it! Biden owns the campaign against “disinformation.” The pandemic brought our fascist tendencies to a number of Democratic governors, including California's Gavin Newsome and Kentucky's Steve Beshear.
The social media giants have been an important ally for the Biden administration. They were immediately on board with the president's war on “disinformation.” Conservative voices have been silenced with a voracity that would have impressed Joseph Stalin!
Neo-Cons increasingly finding common ground with Democrats
Trump did make enemies with people like Cheney, Christie and Romney! Essentially, he has promised to end or greatly alter everything they believe in, starting with funding pre-emptive wars in faraway places at taxpayer expense!
For them, “democracy” translates to “free trade.” As with the Democrats, they like the government to be more concentrated in a central proximity, because of their connections to key members of the administrative state. Like Democrats, neoconservatives see the president as the “elected ambassador to the administrative state.”
