Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old man, meticulously planned an attack on a Trump rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania, according to security experts. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, was a failed assassination attempt on the former president.
Scammers had extensively scouted the Butler Farm rally site prior to the event. He was seen behaving suspiciously and carrying a rangefinder outside the venue before Donald Trump took the stage. It was later revealed that Crooks had bought ammunition hours before the rally and also bought a ladder, indicating a level of premeditation.
Despite buying a ladder, Crooks did not use it. Instead, he climbed into an air conditioning unit to reach the roof of a building. From this elevated position, he opened fire with a rifle, indicating that he had planned an attack on the roof.
The suspect had also packed explosive materials in his vehicle and was wearing body armor, which he was not wearing, likely to avoid detection. He had been identified as a potential suspect before the assassination attempt.
The incident killed a 50-year-old father of two, Corey Comperatore, and seriously injured two others, David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74. Trump was grazed by a bullet in the right ear
The building from which Crooks took his sniper position had been identified as a security vulnerability. However, the decision was made not to place personnel on the roof. This decision has been widely criticized as a major security failure.
Crooks was neutralized at the scene by Secret Service snipers. He was found dead on the roof, less than 150 meters from where Trump had been speaking.
The Department of Homeland Security's inspector general has since announced an investigation into the Secret Service's handling of security for the event. The FBI is also conducting a federal investigation into Crooks' motives and potential assistance, analyzing his laptop, cellphone and rifle and interviewing dozens of witnesses.
The scammers had no criminal record or documented mental illness. The murder weapon was legally purchased by his father in 2013.
