A tragic accident on a Florida bridge has left three people dead, including a carpool driver and a stolen vehicle. The incident happened the night of Dec. 6 on I-275 at the St. Petersburg Skyway Bridge, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The mayhem began when officers with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office attempted to pull over a stolen Ford Mustang. The driver, 22-year-old Leosvany Roman, reportedly collided with two sheriff's office vehicles before fleeing the scene. The chase escalated when Roman struck a highway patrol officer's vehicle, rear-ended it and sped off, eventually crashing head-on into a Dodge Caravan.
The driver of the Caravan, who has been confirmed as an Uber operator, was pronounced dead at the scene along with one of his three passengers. A second passenger later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital. The driver was a 33-year-old man from Bradenton, Florida, and the passenger who died at the scene was a 52-year-old man from Ohio.
Sheriff Chad Chronister expressed outrage at the incident, stating, “This criminal had no regard for human life. Our deputies, faced with danger, had to jump out of the way of a man they feared he would run them over to get away. The additional charges he faces will ensure that the only path he takes again is one that leads straight to prison.”
While the dead driver was confirmed to be an Uber operator, it remains unclear if he was on duty for Uber at the time of the crash. Uber stated that they have no record of the trip and that the accident “does not appear to be connected to the Uber platform.”
A 24-year-old passenger from Ohio reportedly suffered serious injuries, and a 27-year-old police officer, a two-year veteran of the department, also suffered minor injuries as a result of the incident.
Roman now faces multiple charges including felony murder, vehicular homicide, aggravated fleeing and eluding involving death, driving on a suspended license involving death and battery on a law enforcement officer.
