An independent human rights organization has expressed concern over the presence of neo-Nazi accounts on TikTok, accusing the platform of hosting and promoting content that denies the Holocaust, glorifies Hitler and supports white supremacist mass shooters. The report claims that these accounts use advanced techniques such as generative AI, coded language and manipulated images to bypass content filters.
The report alleges that TikTok hosts hundreds of accounts that openly support Nazism and use the platform to spread its ideology and propaganda. This includes videos that deny the Holocaust, glorify Hitler and Nazi-era Germany, support white supremacist mass shooters, and even show live footage or re-enactments of these massacres.
The organization claims to have uncovered a network of hundreds of such accounts. He also notes that TikTok's algorithm, like YouTube's, amplifies such content, creating a self-reinforcing loop that leads to more content of the same kind, including hate speech and misinformation.
Additionally, the report claims that after viewing just a few videos from these accounts, a new fake account received a recommendation for Nazi propaganda. For a long-standing fake account that had been linked to more such content, most of the videos on TikTok's “For You” page promoted Nazism or hate speech.
The organization accuses TikTok of not taking swift action to remove these videos, despite its community guidelines that prohibit hate ideologies, promotion of violence and Holocaust denial. Even a day after the report, the accounts were still active. The reported accounts had collectively accumulated more than 6.2 million views. Two weeks later, 15 of the accounts were banned, and within a month, 23 out of 50 had been deleted. However, the rest of the accounts were active and the banned ones had already exceeded two million views.
The report concludes that while TikTok eventually removes most offensive content, it only does so after they have achieved a significant number of views. Tactics used by neo-Nazi accounts include generative artificial intelligence to create images of cultural or racial invasion that inspire fear, the use of well-known songs or images commonly used by Nazi or neo-Nazi influencers, and language coded with emojis, acronyms , or numbers to avoid content filters.
