I’ve seen enough to fix this girl and I’ve seen her type a million times. And they are a dime a dozen in the world of writing. They almost always go to the arts…never to the sciences. Because your intelligence can be measured in the sciences. Writing is subjective.
Molly here grew up poor, TN I think she said, but she mentions “poor” and “the south” a million times. She makes a point here. That he has the authority to speak on these issues and tell the liberal New York writing society that they are right to hate poor rural whites.
Make no mistake, I’d bet Molly here has a slightly above average IQ and was probably in an underfunded school system. Most rural schools get leftovers after the cities take all the money.
I’d also bet that my IQ is much higher and that my aptitude tests probably blow her out of the water. But I digress… She knows “better than this dirt”. She knows she is destined for better things than her ignorant father.
And bashing her father and where she comes from is her ticket to the world she so desperately wants to be a part of. The world that has been watching from behind the glass for so long. She wants to be accepted, to be one of them, to be on the other side of the glass looking out.
Make no mistake, he hates his parents and where he grew up. But now he can use them now that he is free. Away from home, at college, with that scholarship he worked so hard for to escape that hellhole. Now he is among his people. Free from the unwashed.
It probably started organically, a comment here once there and the next thing he knows the cool kids from the old money families of New York are hanging on him for every word of hatred for his home and his father. He’s telling them everything they’ve always believed and they can’t get enough.
He captivates them with his ignorant father’s tails. With each passing day, it becomes slower, more racist. Their house becomes a broken-down mobile home, then a shack. He’s probably drooling over his senior year.
But what did he ask you? Why is she so angry and full of rage and hate now? Did you get what you wanted? She got it, she’s in New York. a teacher Around him all day. A published author. How can someone get their wish at 28 and still be so bitter, hateful and angry?
Because, once again, he knows he’s better than this. An apartment in Flatbush? Ikea shelves? I should buy the kitchen knobs from Restoration Hardware, not Home Depot. God, the people there are no better than the commoners back home.
His friends in New York (at least some of them) had trust funds, they came from money, they had a grandfather who paid them. But here he is returning money that if his stupid ignorant father hadn’t been so stupid and poor, he wouldn’t have to pay it back.
As if that were even possible, their hatred grows deeper. His father is responsible for why he is not doing as well as his friends. He did not give him any trust funds. Stupid blue collar ignoramuses back home shouldn’t be buying houses…or being happy.
There are 2 big age moments in your life.
When you realize that you are no longer a child and that your “youth” is in the past. (28-32)
And when you realize that you are old and there is more life behind you than in front of you. (45-55)
Obviously ages vary by person, but it’s #1.
And instead of reflecting, rebuilding a relationship with his father, reassessing his worldview. He went with what he knows, what has never failed him and doubles down.
Yes… it’s the fault of the ignorant and racists. They are to blame.
“They” objected to repaying their loans. “They” oppose the defunding of police departments. “They” pointed to the violence in the BLM riots. If they ended up in a row, Molly could finally be happy and get what’s coming to her. What has been earned. which is correct
This doesn’t have to end with you crying on a gravestone, begging, pleading, aching for just 5 minutes to get it all back. I have seen this and you are not ready for this pain when it comes.
