A survey conducted by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) reveals that a staggering 73% of Jewish college students in the United States have faced or witnessed anti-Semitism during the current school year. This alarming finding sheds light on the heightened tensions and hostile environment surrounding the Israel-Hamas conflict on US campuses.
The survey, which included responses from more than 500 Jewish college students on 689 campuses across the country, indicates a significant decline in the sense of comfort and acceptance among Jewish students. Since October 7, the percentage of students who feel comfortable being open about their Jewish identity has dropped from 63.7% to just 38.6%.
The ADL report further details the nature of the anti-Semitic incidents, which range from vandalism to threats of violence and physical assault. The rise in anti-Semitism coincides with the recent escalation of the Israel-Hamas conflict, which saw a 400% increase in anti-Semitic incidents in the United States in the first two weeks of October.
In response to these alarming trends, the US Department of Justice has announced that it is closely monitoring the growing threats against Jews and Muslims. President Joe Biden has also unequivocally condemned anti-Semitism and Islamophobia.
To gain a deeper understanding of the issue, the ADL, in partnership with Hillel International, surveyed more than 3,000 American college students, including 527 Jewish students. The survey was conducted in two waves, from July 26 to August 30 and from November 6 to November 10.
