@SPLCUnion's thread on the Thread Reader App – Thread Reader App

-

Today @splcenter, an organization with nearly $1 billion in reserves, given an F rating by CharityWatch for “hoarding” donations, cut its staff by a quarter.

SPLC's decision has a catastrophic impact on the organization's work in support of immigrants seeking justice and its mission to dismantle white supremacy, strengthen intersectional movements, and advance human rights by supporting educators.

CEO and President Margaret Huang announced that the cuts would allow for a greater “focus” on racial justice, but did not explain how the elimination of immigrant justice work and anti-racist education work served that purpose. goal.

Over 60 members of the SPLC Union, including five Union Commissioners and our Union President, were told they would be out of a job. We are devastated for our Union and for our colleagues.

The functional elimination of the Learning for Justice department leaves educators, students, and caregivers without resources and support to create curricula and orient classrooms toward justice work.

The layoffs of the Southern Immigrant Freedom Initiative's 16 employees and the closing of its offices will decimate free legal representation for detained immigrants in Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi.

The dismantling of the entire Immigrant Justice team ends SPLC's decade-long commitment to the rights of migrant workers and deep coalition work to defend immigrant rights and decriminalize migration in the Southeast.

This shameful decision comes at a critical time for struggling people in the Southeast.

As attacks on immigrant communities and public education are at an all-time high, Huang has chosen to abandon those individuals, organizations and communities with which our staff has relationships and obligations without notice to partners and organizations of the community we work with.

Make no mistake: Laying off dozens of employees, many of whom were union activists, less than a year before negotiating our second contract was no fluke.

This is designed to punish union activists and intimidate employees as we saw when Mercedes-Benz fired union organizers in Vance, Alabama. Management's goals here are clear, but they won't win. Our Union is strong.

With an endowment of nearly a billion dollars and Huang making $500,000 a year, how does abandoning the SPLC's commitments help advance human rights for all people? Are these the actions of an organization fighting for racial justice in the Deep South?

How will today's layoffs help us achieve our goals of fighting hate, freeing black and brown people, defending democracy, and eradicating poverty? The answer is: they won't.
