(Louis Cornelius, Holder USA) The disgraced former deputy. Jordi SantosRN.Y., doesn't go away quietly a day later be expelled from Congress on allegations of fraud, misuse of campaign funds and falsification of federal records.
In a series of Twitter postsSantos addressed some of his former colleagues directly, criticizing what he saw as their lack of accountability for their alleged illegal actions.
Among those highlighted by Santos were Reps. Nicole Malliotakis, RN.Y.; Nick Lalota, RN.Y.; Mike Lawler, RN.Y.; and Rob Menéndez, DN.J. (son of Sen. Bob Menendez). In particular, these lawmakers were among the leading voices calling for it Dismissal of Santos.
Santos first directed his criticism at Malliotakis, who voted for his expulsion. Santos pledged to file a complaint with the Office of Congressional Ethics (separate from the Ethics Committee of the Chamber) against Malliotakis for “questionable stock trading” since his appointment to the House Ways and Means Committee.
“Before joining the committee, the congresswoman did not have an active commercial habit or a large-volume participation. The question is, what set of information are you trading with?” Santos questioned. This came hours after Malliotakis he defended his vote expel Santos in a video, further reducing his party's already slim majority.
Santos then turned his attention to Lawler, a prominent voice among them New York Republican delegationwho played a key role in eliminating Santos.
Santos accused Lawler of possible money laundering by using Checkmate Strategies, a company with which Lawler is affiliated, to pay for services connected to his congressional campaign.
“The worrying questions are; Is Lawler in the business of laundering money from his campaign to his company and then into his own pocket? I'll let the Office of Congressional Ethics be the judge of that,” Santos said.
LaLota, also from the New York delegation, became the object of criticism from Santos. The ousted congressman accused LaLota of possibly embezzling public funds from New York taxpayers because of his alleged concurrent attendance at Hofstra for a JD while working on the state board of elections.
“It has been brought up in the local media that Congressman Lalota earned his JD by attending Hofstra in day school while he was supposed to be working for the board of elections at the same time,” Santos said. claimed. “The questionable actions are? Did Rep. Lalota not show up for his tax-funded job while in school, and if so, may he have stolen public funds from New York taxpayers?
Santos did not stop there, and raised concerns about the Rob Menendezson of the assailed senator Menéndez, who represents New Jersey's 8th Congressional District. Santos specifically questioned the younger Menendez's connections to his father, who faces a federal indictment on bribery charges.
Santos' accusations followed the House of Representatives' vote to expel him, with a balance of 311 to 114 votesincluding 105 Republicans voting for his expulsion.
This marked Santos as the sixth lawmaker in history to be expelled from Congress, further reducing the Republicans' slim majority. It should be noted that he is the first lawmaker expelled since the Civil War without a criminal conviction or a recommendation from the House ethics committee for expulsion.
