A Los Angeles socialite who was convicted of murder for killing two boys with her car during a chase with her lover she cried to the judge that she had suffered enough; then it broke when she was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.
Rebecca Grossman, 60, who killed brothers Jacob, 8, and Mark Iskander, 11, in a runaway incident in 2020 — made a desperate plea to Superior Court Judge Joseph Brandolino to take it easy as prosecutors sought the maximum 34 years to life in state prison.
Her lawyers argued for her to be released on probation.
But Brandolino gave her 15 years to life and ordered her to pay $47,000 in restitution, saying she was “not a monster as prosecutors described her.”
In giving him the more lenient sentence, the judge cited Grossman's history as a philanthropist.
“I am not a murderer, and I ask you to recognize this true fact,” Grossman wrote in a letter to the judge, despite being convicted of second-degree murder in February.
“My pain, my recognition of the pain that the Iskanders suffer and the pain that I see my family endure, are punishments that I will suffer now and will suffer for the rest of my life,” he added.
“Please consider this suffering when considering what further punishment to inflict on me in this case.”
Her husband, the renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Peter Grossman, and his daughter, Alexis, and son, Nick, also submitted letters to the court along with about three dozen Grossman supporters asking for a probationary sentence.
All three also arrived in court Monday for their sentencing, where Rebecca Grossman faced the victims' loved ones.
“My pain is a part of your pain,” Grossman tearfully told the young victims' mother, Nancy Iskander. according to the Los Angeles Times.
“I never saw anybody. I never saw anybody,” Grossman also told the court as he claimed he went into a state of denial after the crash.
“I would have hit a brick wall… I don't know why God didn't take my life.”
Iskander asked Brandolino to slap Grossman with a sentence that coincided with the tragic deaths of her two sons, according to the newspaper.
“She's a coward,” he said of Grossman.
Peter Grossman stood by his wife during the trial, despite revelations he was drinking with her then lover, former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Scott Ericksonbefore the accident.
Rebecca Grossman too continued to dodge responsibility to the letterstating that while the “tragic accident” that killed the brothers continues to haunt her, she “didn't see anyone or anything on the road” the day her car hit Jacob and Mark.
Prosecutors say he was racing Erickson in his Mercedes GLE 43 AMG and reaching speeds of up to 81 mph before the fatal crash.
“I can only imagine the pain this brings [the boys’ parents] Nancy and Karim Iskander feel minute by minute,” Grossman wrote. “I will carry my pain for the rest of my life.”
Grossman maintains that he was neither drunk nor impaired when Jacob and Mark were killed.
Prosecutors say the married philanthropist was drinking at brunch with her then-lover Erickson, and then proceeded to run with him down a residential street, where she hit the boys and then fled.
“The voices calling for revenge and retribution are reacting to the tragic loss of Mark and Jacob, but they do not describe me fairly or who I am. I am not a murderer,” he concluded.
The letter to the judge was remarkably similar to the one he wrote to Nancy and Karim Iskander, who the family claimed made everything about her and suggested she could buy a house and turn it into a family burn and trauma center dedicated to his children.
Prosecutors have criticized Grossman as a narcissist who believed his “wealth and notoriety would buy him freedom,” adding that he tried to blame Erickson for the fatal crash.
“From the beginning, the facts have been distorted and misrepresented, turning the tragic accident into murder and me into a cold-blooded killer,” he added.
“The defendant's actions from September 29, 2020 to today show a complete lack of remorse and narcissistic superiority that only lead to one conclusion, that she deserves no leniency,” prosecutors said.
Along with the letter to the judge, a website titled “Notes on Rebecca's Behalf” was set up, urging readers not to form a “biased opinion” of her and featuring testimonials from anonymous people imploring the state that he took pity on her.
“This image of my mother as a wealthy woman with a title is absurd to me because she is the most humble and selfless woman I have ever met,” Alexis wrote in court.
“[A probationary sentence] would allow him to live out his remorse through continued service and contributions to society, especially in ways that honor the memory of the Iskander children,” Peter wrote.
Grossman was convicted in February of two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of vehicular manslaughter and one count of hit-and-run.
Prosecutors said Mark and Jacob were crossing the street in the crosswalk with their mother and younger brother when Grossman struck them and fled, leaving the children for dead.
The socialite hit the boys so hard that the older brother flew more than 250 feet.
