According to authorities, the decision to close the boardwalk came after an overwhelming number of complaints about a large gathering of young adults and minors over Memorial Day weekend. A statement issued by the police mentioned an increase in “civil unrest”, which led to the closure.
Although municipal authorities did not specify any specific incident that triggered the closure, they emphasized that despite the presence and efforts of local police officers and other law enforcement agencies, the situation began to worsen.
Mayor Ernie Troiano, Jr. declared a state of emergency for the city, allowing for a greater police presence. In a press release, Troiano, Jr. attributed the incident to “unruly” teenagers and vowed that Wildwood would not tolerate such behavior. He added, “We wholeheartedly support the City of Wildwood Police Department in protecting this community from these nuisance crowds on our waterfront and in town.”

The influx of unruly teenagers proved to be a major challenge for local law enforcement, and officials acknowledged that the situation escalated to the point where they were unable to respond to certain calls for service in the city.
The promenade was reopened around 5:30 a.m., with the removal of the police tape that had been placed at the entrances. The dispersal of the remaining crowds was aided by an overnight rainstorm, as seen in video footage of the scene.
