Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg tried to take a jab at former President Trump for not wanting to debate Vice President Harris. It didn't go well.

In a post on X, Buttigieg commented: “Has a presidential candidate ever accepted a debate and then backed out? A remarkable display of weakness here.”
Has a presidential candidate ever agreed to a debate and then backed out?
Notable show of weakness here. https://t.co/tw9KhmhkpN

That sparked a round of criticism from many who pointed out that it was actually Biden who had backed out of a debate commitment with Trump during the previous election cycle.
Well, at least she didn't leave the nation during the worst supply chain problem of our time to go on maternity leave

CNN's Scott Jennings chimed in on X, saying, “Yes. Biden. Literally this past weekend,” while pollster Frank Luntz noted, “Joe Biden agreed to 2 debates, then pulled out of the entire his campaign after the first.”
Wowzers. I will need the trauma gear for this level burn. 🔥 🚨🚑🚒. Frank in throwing HEAT. 🍖

Similarly, Mollie Hemingway of The Federalist asked, “All I can think of is Joe Biden, right?” and Fox News contributor Guy Benson expressed surprise at Buttigieg's comments, offering: “The man just walked out of the race (and therefore the second debate), clearly against his will. Aside from the undeniable weakness, give him a moment's peace.”

I'm actually surprised that Pete is so down with his boss, Joe Biden. The man *just* walked out of the race (and therefore out of the second debate), clearly against his will. Undeniable weakness aside, give him a moment of peace. https://t.co/KgdOt8OElK

Alina Habba weighed in on Fox News. I will see:
Trump recently expressed his willingness to debate Vice President Harris more than once before the 2024 presidential election. “Absolutely. I would like to. I think it's important,” he said in response to a question from Fox News' Bill Melugin during a conference call with reporters. Trump also signaled his openness to more debate, clarifying: “I haven't agreed to anything. I accepted a debate with Joe Biden.”
BREAKING: On a call with reporters, former President Trump told me he's willing to commit to “more than one” debate with Kamala Harris if she's the Democratic nominee.
“Oh, yes, absolutely, I want to,” Trump said when I asked.

Trump's campaign later announced it would not commit to a debate until Democrats finalize their nominee, arguing that scheduling talks with Harris could be inappropriate if the Democratic nominee changes.
Vice President Harris criticized this stance as “backsliding.”
Trump agreed to a debate on September 10.
Now it seems to be backtracking.
Voters deserve to see the split screen that exists on a debate stage.
I'm ready So let's go.
