With 53% of voters supporting the measure, Crook County is now the 13th county in Eastern Oregon to support this move for secession.

In response to the result, Greater Idaho Executive Director Matt McCaw said, “Eastern Oregon voters have spoken loud and clear about their desire to see border talks move forward. With this latest result in Crook County, there is no excuse for the Legislature and the governor to continue to ignore the wishes of the people.”

The push for secession stems from the desire of conservative residents of eastern Oregon to break away from their liberal counterparts in the western part of the state, seeking to align with Idaho.

This movement has been fueled by sharp ideological disparities regarding crime and social policy, creating a notable schism between urban centers and rural areas and serving as a catalyst for the drive toward secession.

If secession efforts are successful, Oregon's border would see a westward shift of 200 miles, the measure highlights.

Emphasizing the reason for the move, its official website stated: “The Oregon/Idaho line was established 163 years ago and is now obsolete. It makes no sense in its current location because it does not match the location of the cultural divide in Oregon.”

Prineville – On Tuesday, Crook County voters approved Measure 7-86, which asked voters if they supported negotiations to move the Oregon/Idaho border to include Crook County in Idaho. The measure passes with 53% of the vote (https://results.oregonvotes.gov/ResultsSW.aspx?type=CTYALL&cty=12&map=CTY) and makes Crook County the 13th county in eastern 'Oregon to approve a measure of Greater Idaho. Calls to action from movement leaders were swift, with executive director Matt McCaw issuing the following statement:

“Eastern Oregon voters have spoken loud and clear about their desire to see border talks move forward. With this latest result in Crook County, there is no excuse for the Legislature and the governor to continue to ignore the wishes of the people. We are asking the Governor, the Speaker of the House and the President of the Senate to sit down with us and discuss the next steps to change governance for the people of Eastern Oregon, as well as for the Legislature to begin to hold hearings on what a potential change will look like at the border.”

The movement's president, Mike McCarter, agreed. “For the past three years we have gone directly to voters and asked them what they want from their state government. What they are telling us through these votes is that they want their leaders to move the border. In our system, the people are in charge, and it is time for the leaders who represent them to do so,” he said.

The group also noted that they expected the results would have been even higher if not for an extensive “no” vote campaign funded by Portland groups. Last year in Wallowa County voting, Portland groups topped Greater Idaho 4-1. The movement suspects that the same thing happened this year, although it is impossible to know, since the group that finances the “no” effort has not reported its expenses to the State, although they are obliged to by law

The Greater Idaho movement seeks to move the Oregon-Idaho border to include 14 full eastern Oregon counties and 3 partial ones. In addition to the 13 counties that have passed the Greater Idaho measures, in 2023 the Idaho House passed a monument inviting the Oregon legislature to begin border talks.

Supporters of the movement believe moving the border would benefit both parts of the state and allow for better representation and governance for people moving forward. For more information and royalty-free photos for media use, visit greatidaho.org.
