Democratic Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York reacted to a Texas judge’s ruling against the abortion pill by saying that President Joe Biden should ignore the ruling entirely.
Ocasio-Cortez made the comments in an interview with Anderson Cooper on his CNN show Friday evening after Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk ruled that the FDA had improperly approved an abortion pill more than two decades ago.
“Some of these sentences, I think we’ve been preparing and anticipating them because they’re these egregious overreach, by members of the judiciary, appointed by a right-wing Republican party, uh, whose goal for a long time was just to pack. these courts with partisan judges, often underqualified or completely unqualified for their role,” he said.
“And so it’s been thought, I think, given that, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) has already issued statements, uh, for example, advising what we should do in a situation like this, which I’m OK,” Ocasio-Cortez continued.
“Which is, I think, the Biden administration should ignore this ruling,” he stammered.
“I think we should, you know, that the courts have legitimacy, and they’re based on the legitimacy of their rulings,” he explained, “and what they’re doing right now is a dramatic and unprecedented erosion of the legitimacy of the courts “.
Cooper rejected her demand, warning her that it would be unwise to set a precedent for the executive branch to simply ignore the decisions of the government’s judicial branch. Ocasio-Cortez responded by asserting that many of the judges appointed by former President Donald Trump were not qualified for their roles.
He went on to compare the abortion pill to Claritin, an antihistamine, or Aspirin, a pain reliever, and cited a historical anomaly when President Franklin D. Roosevelt tried to ignore a Supreme Court ruling a hundred years ago. She failed to mention that even the Democrats criticized Roosevelt for trying to overturn the government order, and he finally agreed.
Ocasio-Cortez’s comments are all the more puzzling given that Kacsmaryk’s ruling allows the government seven days to file an appeal and fight the ban from taking effect until a higher court can rule on the matter.
