New York Mayor Eric Adams appeals for help, says migrant influx could cost city $12 billion

-

New York City Mayor Eric Adams made another call for state and federal help to deal with the flood of migrants to the Big Apple, saying New Yorkers will be on the hook for billions of dollars if you don’t get help.

In a formal City Hall address Wednesday, Adams said, “If we don’t get the support we need, New Yorkers could be left with a $12 billion bill.”

“As I stated almost a year ago, we are facing an unprecedented state of emergency,” Adams said. “The immigration system in this nation is broken. It’s been broken for decades. Today, New York City is left to pick up the pieces.”

According to the mayor, nearly 100,000 “men, women and children” have sought refuge in New York City since the spring of 2022.

“We’re past our breaking point,” Adams declared. “New Yorkers’ compassion may be limitless, but our resources are not, and our partners at the state and federal level know that.”

“Let me put this into perspective for New Yorkers. For every family that seeks asylum through the city’s care, we spend an average of $383 per night to provide shelter, food, medical care and social services. With more than 57,300 people currently in our care, on an average night, that adds up to $9.8 million a day, almost $300 million a month and almost $3.6 billion a year,” the mayor said .

“But that’s the floor, not the ceiling,” he continued. “This is only an estimate if the number of migrants in our care remains the same over time. However, we are clear that without policy changes, the number of migrants arriving will continue to grow. This will increase our cost. If we continue to this unsustainable path, averaging nearly 34,000 households per night for this fiscal year alone, the cost will rise to $4.7 billion.”

“Listen to me,” pleaded Adams, “if things don’t change, our new estimates have us spending nearly $5 billion on this crisis in the current fiscal year. That’s more than the $1.4 billion we spend last fiscal year. And it almost matches the budgets of the Department of Sanitation, our Parks Department and the FDNY combined.”

“And if things don’t change, we expect to have more than 100,000 asylum seekers in our care by the end of June 2025, bringing projected spending to $6.1 billion this fiscal year if we don’t change course “, he said. “That means over three fiscal years, our city is projected to have spent more than $12 billion.”

“To meet this need, we will need to add $7 billion to our financial plan,” he explained. “And that’s on top of what we’ve previously earmarked for the crisis. That’s the budget reality we face if we don’t get the additional support we need from the federal and state governments.”

But according to criminal defense attorney Arthur Aidala, who is closely tied to Adam’s former chief of staff, Frank Carone, President Biden will not offer any major federal aid to New York City until after the 2024 presidential election.

“I don’t think I’m betraying any confidence… They were on their knees behind closed doors begging,” Aidala. he said 770 WABC’s “Sid & Friends in the Morning” on Wednesday. “And basically the word they got back was, ‘Wait a year.’ If Biden is re-elected, he will cut you a check for a lot of money. But we won’t do it until after the presidential election.”

“They go to Albany for help. They go to D.C. for help,” he said. “They wear bupkus.”

According to Aidala, the City Council is at the end of its “wisdom”.

“I was with a senior City official yesterday, who spoke to me frankly,” he recalled, “and said, “We’re at our wits’ end.”The problem isn’t just finding places for these people. But when we find places for people, we can’t find anyone to run the thing.”
