Monterey Park shooter Huu Can Tran has died after shooting himself

The suspected Monterey Park shooter who killed 10 people and wounded 10 more has died, authorities say. The suspect in the Monterey Park shooting reportedly killed himself.

During a press conference Sunday night, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna identified the Monterey Park shooter as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran.

Luna said Tran died inside a white van from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Law enforcement found a handgun inside the van.

Tran used a magazine-fed semi-automatic handgun that had an extended high-capacity magazine attached in the deadly shooting that killed 10 people, according to Luna.

The sheriff said seven victims are still hospitalized.

On Sunday afternoon, law enforcement surrounded a white van in the city of Torrance, about 30 miles southwest of Monterey Park. SWAT units swarmed the white van with BearCat armored vehicles.

SWAT team officers opened the passenger window and entered the vehicle. Officers searched the van and left shortly after.

Los Angeles’ KNBC reported that the man in the van “died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound,” according to two law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation.

Footage of the van shows a person slumped in the driver’s seat with their head on the steering wheel.

Late Saturday night, the gunman opened fire on people at the Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park. Then, about 30 minutes later, the shooter walked into the Lai Lai Ballroom in the nearby Alhambra. He came in with a gun. Patrons at the dance hall fought back with his gun, and witnesses said the suspect fled in a white van.

Authorities have not released a possible motive for the fatal shooting.

The Monterey Park shooting took place on the first day of a two-day Lunar New Year festival.

Police released a picture of the suspect on Sunday, but did not release the man’s name at the time. The special bulletin said the suspect in the Monterey Park shooting was an Asian male adult about 5 feet 10 inches tall. The bulletin considered the suspect armed and dangerous.

This is a developing story and will be updated as new details become available.
