In a major blow to the notorious Sinaloa cartel, two alleged bosses, Ismael Zambada Garcia, known as “El Mayo,” and Joaquín Guzman López, son of the cartel's co-founder, were arrested today in El Paso, Texas.

This significant development came as part of the Justice Department's alleged crackdown on the cartel's criminal activities, particularly its networks for the production and distribution of the lethal fentanyl.

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland condemned the Sinaloa cartel as “one of the most violent and powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world.”

He stated that the Department of Justice is determined to hold each cartel member and leader accountable for the devastating impact of their narcotics trade on American communities.

This latest action adds El Mayo and Joaquin Guzman Lopez to a growing list of Sinaloa Cartel bigwigs and cohorts facing justice in the United States.

Among the prominent figures already in custody are the cartel's other co-founder, Joaquín Guzmán Loera, popularly known as “El Chapo”; another of El Chapo's sons and presumed partner of the cartel, Ovidio Guzman López; and the alleged killer in chief of the cartel, Néstor Isidro Pérez Salas, also known as “El Nini”.
