Gunfire erupted Saturday night at a ballroom dance club in Monterey Park, California, terrorizing a Lunar New Year festival and leaving at least 10 people dead, according to multiple reports.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed so far that 10 people were pronounced dead at the scene and 10 others were taken to the hospital with injuries of varying severity.
The suspect fled the scene and remains at large as of press time. So far, authorities have only identified the suspect as male and have not provided any other physical description.
The shooting happened in a predominantly Asian community, leading many to speculate that it may have been a racially motivated crime, but police have so far warned the public that there simply isn’t enough information available to draw any conclusions. this meaning “We’re going to look at every angle as far as whether or not this is a hate crime. It’s too early in the investigation to know,” said Capt. Andrew Meyer of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. .
Meyer added that people “were running out of the place screaming” when officers arrived at the scene around 10:30 p.m. local time. Meyer also said there was no information on the type of weapon used by the shooter, or a possible motive. He indicated that police were investigating whether the shooting was related to another incident at the Alhambra to see if they were possibly related. No injuries were reported in that incident.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre indicated on Twitter that President Biden has been briefed on the situation and has offered the full resources and assistance of the FBI with the investigation.
