Lavabit: The secure email program owned by Ladar Levison that defied the FBI’s order to hand over Snowden’s emails

If you use one of Big Tech’s free email programs, such as Google’s Gmail, Yahoo, or Microsoft’s Hotmail, you are exposing your private communication to prying eyes, including the US government.

As I wrote earlier, hosting your own domain name and having your own private email is a much better option.

There are also companies that advertise private and secure email services.

PC Magazine has an article that reviews many of these third-party email services:

One option PC Magazine doesn’t mention, however, is Lavabit, which is the secure email service Edward Snowden used when he left the NSA.

Ladar Levison, the owner of Lavabit, was ordered by the FBI to hand over his private Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) keys, which would have allowed the FBI to not only access Snowden’s emails, but to all other Lavabit customer emails, about 400,000 at the time.

Not only could the FBI have been able to retrieve emails from Lavabit customers, but they could have intercepted their emails retrieving things like passwords, credit card information, and pretty much anything else they wanted.

Ladar decided to protect its customers, shutting down its business and deleting all of its customers’ accounts, effectively going out of business after building one of the most successful private email services for over 10 years.

Then he “took the keys” to the FBI.

In 2017 Lavabit started operating again, using the new Dark Internet Mail Environment (DIME), which is an end-to-end email encryption platform.

Lavabit is not a free email service. It costs $30 per year for your Standard account or $60 per year for your Premium account. They are still developing other products with the DIME protocol, such as webmail, but for now you can use the service with your own email client.

I signed up for an account to try it out and it worked perfectly and was easy to set up.

At this point, I should say that this may be the best option for secure email from a third-party provider, due to its encryption, which supposedly doesn’t even allow anyone working at Lavabit to access customer emails and therefore would have nothing to hand over to government authorities who may try to access their customers’ emails.

More information at Lavabit.com.

Note: This is a completely unbiased review of Lavabit, and I don’t make any money from it if you decide to use it. One of our wonderful Health Impact News readers told me about this service and wanted to share it with everyone.
