Karine Jean-Pierre Falsely Claims Gay Florida Teachers Are Forced To Remove Spouse Photos From Classrooms

During Thursday’s daily press conference at the White House, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre falsely claimed that gay teachers in Florida are being forced to remove photographs of their spouses from their classrooms.

Jean-Pierre was commenting on Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ “Parents’ Rights to Education” law, which the left continues to misleadingly refer to as the “Don’t Say Gay” law.

The legislation prevents schools from teaching curricula about sexual orientation and gender identity. The law previously applied to kindergarten through third grade. On Wednesday, the Florida Board of Education decided to expand the law to include all grade levels in the state’s public schools. The extension is expected to take effect in about a month.

“We’re not eliminating anything here,” Florida Education Commissioner Manny Diaz Jr. said Wednesday. .

Last year, Jean-Pierre called the advance of the initial bill a “disturbing and dangerous trend” of “anti-LGBTQI+” and “anti-trans” legislation.

On Thursday, the press secretary again spoke out against the law, referring to it as the “dystopian ‘Don’t say gay’ state law.”

“As this measure goes into effect, it will prohibit all students, up to high school students, from knowing about our people: learning or talking about LGBTQI+ people in classrooms,” Jean-Pierre continued. “Florida teachers have already faced the devastating consequences of current law.”

He then falsely claimed that DeSantis’ “Parents’ Rights to Education” law prevents gay teachers from displaying photographs of their spouses in their classrooms.

“Under threat of having their licenses revoked, gay teachers have been forced to remove photos of their spouses from their desks and censor classroom material,” Jean-Pierre erroneously claimed.

The press secretary then blasted Republican lawmakers for speaking out against canceling the culture “all while threatening teachers with losing their jobs if they teach something the MAGA extremists don’t agree with.” ‘agreement’.

The inaccurate claim originated from comments made by teachers during an Orange County school board meeting in June 2022. According to the teachers, during administrator-only meetings, school district attorneys had advised officials of the school to dissuade educators from showing same-sex and rainbow photographs. elements in their classrooms. However, the district later rejected the advice, noting that it was not “formal guidance.”

“All teachers are encouraged to keep photos of their families in the classroom,” the Orange County School District stated. “However, in K-3, it cautioned against specific discussions in case those discussions could be construed as classroom instruction about sexual orientation or gender identity.”
