Prime Minister Justin Trudeau blamed the “American right wing” for Muslim Canadians’ opposition to gender ideology and LGBTQ curriculum in K-12.
The video showed Trudeau speaking to the Muslim community last week at a Calgary mosque, the Baitun Nur Mosque, after hundreds of protesters demonstrated against gender ideology in schools, chanting, “Leave our children alone.”
Frustration reached a boiling point after audio surfaced of an Edmonton Public Schools teacher berating Muslim students for skipping school to avoid Pride events.
“It goes two ways. If you want to be respected for who you are, if you don’t want to suffer prejudice because of your religion, your skin color or whatever, you better give it back to people who are different from you. That’s how it works,” he explains the teacher.
One Muslim individual told Trudeau where the community was coming from, according to the video. “I am asking you, Mr. Prime Minister, please protect our culture, our belief, the sin that is being done to them.”
He replied: “First of all, there is a lot of misinformation and misinformation [from] People on social media, especially driven by the American right wing, are spreading a lot of lies about what’s actually … on the resume.”
Trudeau’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
On June 25, in Calgary, Alberta, hundreds of protesters chanted “Leave our children alone!” and “Our children, our choice!”
“My brothers and my sisters. We can’t stay hidden anymore [the issue is]… getting closer to each and every one of us,” Mahmoud Mourra said at the event. “If today you are not a father, tomorrow you will be. If today you are not a mother, tomorrow you will be. You will have a daughter. Or you will have a son underage? She’s so vulnerable and you’ve got some really powerful hyenas and predators that they’re willing to go for. Let them do whatever they can to get you away from your…kids.”
“We will protect our children as much as necessary,” he continued.
Trudeau claimed that right-wing forces were creating a rift between the Muslim community “that is damaging the fabric of respect and openness that allows Canada to be one of the places where we support and defend the Muslim community more than any other Western Canadian.” .
“If you look at the different curricula… there is no… aggressive teaching or conversion of kids to being LGBT. This is something that is being weaponized by people… on the far right who have consistently opposed to Muslim rights,” he said.
“But they’re weaponizing the LGBT issue, which is something that, yes, Islam has strong views on. Just like the religious right in Canada, the Christian right, has strong views against it. They’re using those fears to drive a wedge between a government that will always stand up for all your rights.”
“Just as I will always stand up for the rights of LGBT children, even if they are LGBT Muslims… We will stand up for your rights even when you disagree with us standing up for other people’s rights.”
Left-wing commentators in the United States have responded in kind to the Muslim uprising against gender ideology by stoking fear about what an alignment with the right might mean.
Michelle Goldberg, an opinion columnist at The New York Times called the supposed ideological alliance between Christians and Muslims on education “strange new political bedfellows”, and went on to list the supposed phobia of Muslims on the right.
MSNBC ran a similar narrative at least twice in recent weeks, claiming that the right wing was “recruiting” Muslims.
The claim was disputed by an executive of the Council for American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).
Edward Ahmed Mitchell, CAIR’s deputy national director, said it was time for “liberal commentators” like MSNBC’s Psaki to “accept that Muslim parents are intelligent, independent people who speak for themselves.”
CAIR is the “largest Muslim civil rights organization” in America.
Director of the Religious Freedom Institute’s Islam and Religious Liberty Action Team, Ismail Royer, told Fox News Digital that Psaki’s comments were insulting to Muslims.
“The left wants to scare Muslims into accepting the indoctrination of our children in exchange for a smile and a pat on the head,” Royer told Fox News Digital. “They insult Muslims by portraying us as lacking agency and intelligence, but we cannot imagine that we have weighed the business they are offering us and turned it down.”
Another activist, Sameerah Munshi of the Muslim-led organization called the Coalition of Virtue, told a board meeting in Montgomery County, Maryland, “Our faith is not partisan and our people are not backward.”
“Part of the American dream for our people is for them to pass on their values to their children. But the members of this school board have made a mockery of our values.”
