Israel agreed to halt military operations against Hamas in northern Gaza for four hours each day to allow humanitarian activities, the White House said Thursday, according to The Associated Press.
President Joe Biden has pressed Israel to implement a multi-day ceasefire to try to achieve this negotiations on the release of hostages and facilitating the flow of necessary supplies to Gazan civilians, the PA reported. In a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, Biden pushed for daily pauses and tried to convince Netanyahu of the importance of longer pauses in hostilities, the AP reported. The call came after a renewed push for negotiations with the terrorist organization Hamas over the release of hostages.
The Israelis have informed the Biden administration of the planned pauses, White House national security spokesman John Kirby told CNN on Thursday reported.
“The Israelis have told us that there will be no military operations in these areas during the pause and that this process begins today,” Kirby said.
The first humanitarian pause will be announced Thursday, and each will be announced at least three hours in advance, Kirby explained, according to the AP.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) halted fighting in Gaza on several occasions in recent days to create a safe path for civilians to flee the disputed areas of northern Gaza, AP reported.
