'Is it a sin to be gay?': Swalwell turns censor hearing into personal debate room with Ben Shapiro

-

Daily Wire editor emeritus Ben Shapiro shut down California Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell's attempts to attack his socially conservative views during a hearing before the House Judiciary Committee.

Shapiro testified before the committee Wednesday about a report alleging that member organizations of the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM) are demonetizing online content based on their political affiliation. The report accused GARM founder Rob Rakowitz of holding “undemocratic views of fundamental American freedoms,” citing what it said were his emails. This report was obtained from The Daily Wire.

Swalwell read particular viewpoints from The Heritage Foundation's “Project 2025” to ask Shapiro what aspects he supports, such as banning pornographic books and same-sex marriage.

“End same-sex marriage, what about that part?” Swalwell he asked.

“I'm in favor of traditional marriage between a man and a woman and I'm perfectly fine with anyone seeking any kind of voluntary sexual arrangement. That's a different matter than whether the government should bring benefits to that personal relationship.” Shapiro said.

“But do you think it's a sin to have same-sex marriage?” the congressman followed.

“I mean, I'm confused, you're asking me as a religious Jew what I think biblically?” he asked, leading Swalwell to wonder if being gay is a sin. (RELATED: Podcast convention apologizes for 'harm' caused by Ben Shapiro's 'presence')

Shapiro expressed opposition to the government regulating private sexual orientation and acts of consent between two adults, but said couples should not be granted special benefits based on their sexual orientation. He also said that most mainstream religions view homosexual acts as a sin.

Swalwell asked Shapiro a series of questions revolving around his religious views on homosexual activity, placing a billboard behind him that quoted the conservative commentator calling the activity a sin.

“And just because we found some receipts, you said, 'I think homosexual activity is a sin.'” Swalwell it began.

“Yes, I am a religious Jew. You found me out,” Shapiro interjected.

The congressman quoted Shapiro as saying that “every religious person” he knows sees sexual behavior as a personal choice. During the hearing, he clarified that he considers homosexual activity, but not the orientation itself, as a sin.

Swalwell pressed Shapiro further on his views on banning the abortion pill and “book bans on slavery.”

“Why would I be in favor of banning books about slavery? That would be absolutely ridiculous. What I'm in favor of is the idea that school libraries should be able to make decisions based on what's appropriate for, say— ne, to a 7th grader and whether it should be about cartoons and Gender Queer. That's not exactly the same thing.”

During the hearing, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan condemned GARM for allegedly trying to silence conservative media outlets, including The Daily Wire and Fox News. in accordance with The Daily Wire. Shapiro witnessed how GARM is allegedly trying to demonetize conservative organizations and pundits to make sure “advertising dollars only flow to left-wing media brands.”
