Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's helicopter made a “hard landing” on Sunday while traveling in Iran's East Azerbaijan province, Iranian state media reported. The incident occurred near Jolfa, a border town with the nation of Azerbaijan, about 600 kilometers northwest of Tehran. Raisi was accompanied by Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, governor of Iran's East Azerbaijan province, and other officials. Local media described the incident as an “accident” but still under investigation. Officials did not provide details on Raisi's condition. Rescuers had difficulty reaching the scene due to poor weather conditions as fog, heavy rain and wind were reported. Iran flies a number of helicopters domestically and has difficulty obtaining parts due to international sanctions. In addition, Iran still relies on its pre-revolutionary military air fleet.

Raisi was in Azerbaijan early Sunday to open a dam with Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev. The dam built on the Aras River is the third built by both nations. Azerbaijan and Iran have had cold relations in the past, most notably after the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran was attacked with a gun in 2023. Azerbaijan's diplomatic plans with Israel are another major concern for in Iran
Raisi, who is a hardline leader and former judicial chief, is seen as a follower of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and some analysts believe he could take over from the 85-year-old leader of his death or resignation. Raisi won Iran's 2021 presidential election in what was the Islamic Republic's lowest-turnout election ever. Raisi's sanctions were extended by the US for his role in the mass execution of several thousand political prisoners in 1988 during the bloody Iran-Iraq war.
